Out with the old, in with the new.

Wow that’s excellent! I’m sure this will be used as inspiration for future tortoise keepers. Great work!

    I Blame You

Yes agreed! I got my first baby two years ago, and if I had the right space would be adopting a Sulcatta or two. Instead I am working to acquire a second Hermanns!

    “Rescuing” a Hermanns

Thank you everyone; I am already experienced at keeping a happy and healthy two year old tortoise, I just wanted to make sure if there were any extra, special care requirements for a tortoise with so much pyramiding.

    “Rescuing” a Hermanns

Hello knowledgeable tortoise keepers.. I came across an add for a tortoise rehoming and sent them a message but I wanted to share a pic of the tortoise here for advice. They say he is 3 years old. In further pics I do see a water dish and at minimum a heat light, as well as romaine lettuce being...

    Substrate Question

Hey there, I'm looking to improve the substrate for my tortoise as I can't seem to keep up with keeping it moist enough. Orchid Bark seems tough to come by where I am, especially at a reasonable price, so I was wondering if a hemp mulch is okay? I found one on amazon that has no chemicals added...

    Outdoor Enclosures for Little Ones?

Even if I dig it into the ground a good 6 inches or so?

    Outdoor Enclosures for Little Ones?

Could I use the largest rubbermaid tub I can find, cut off the bottom, dig it into the ground, and use the lid to cut out a large area and replace it with screen?

    Outdoor Enclosures for Little Ones?

I have a pretty young Hermann's and this summer I would like to give him as much natural UV light as possible by giving him an outdoor area. Space is limited where I'm at, but I'm confident I can make something big enough for Atlas. My main concern is that there are a lot of squirrels and cats...

    Indoor home for a redfoot

I like the idea of using a shower rod for plants and lights. I would recommend against heating mats for any reptile as they can get too hot.. I'm not experienced enough to answer your other questions but hopefully someone will soon.

    Hermanns

Thanks, I'm also cross checking with a facebook group on tortoise weed identifications.

    Hermanns

How do I know which foods are to bed often vs occasionally vs as treats etc.. I discovered today that I have mallow and deadnettle in my yard. The breeder was mainly feeding dandelion which I now hear is to be occasionally fed. And I know that I can get dandelion, watercress and coriander all...

    New to Torts

Atlas is setting in very well I must say! He/She is very active, eating well, drinking well, loves basking and burrowing. I admit I was a little nervous at first because I really wanted everything to be perfect for Atlas and read a lot of beginner issues with babies and illnesses so I've been...

    First Tortoise Table

After some confusion and searching around and reading, I have become impatient waiting for my tortoise table and am going to use laminate flooring to line the inside! There was nothing on any of the shelves that I felt was safe enough while at the same time being effective at moisture prevention.

    First Tortoise Table

I'm looking for the best way to seal up my first tortoise table! My boyfriend surprised me with it and we want to make sure we seal it safely. He has suggested a spray on sealant that is non-toxic for RV's.

    New to Torts

Thanks I actually read the Beginners Mistakes a few days before joining! I live in Ontario, Canada and the weather outside is not favorable but with indoor heating and the lights off in Atlas' enclosure the heat sits around 70 degrees. Atlas is currently in a temporary enclosure as my boyfriend...

    New to Torts

Hello! Yesterday after many years of pining, I acquired my first little tortoise! He/She is a Hermann's tort, hatched in August. I look forward to learning more and more, as I have spent many hours researching and cross referencing sources. So a very long drive, and a much smaller bank account...

    Lighting Question

I picked up a combo light for my Hermann's baby, Atlas. It's UVB and Heat. I'm wondering about night time though. It's an indoor enclosure and in my room. The bulb is very bright to sleep with it on and I know the tort needs darkness at night as well, but if I turn the light off it's taking away...
