AH! I'VE FOUND IT! Paid extra attention while he was walking around today and he hits that part of his shell on the entrance to his humid hide. Every. Time.
The wood on the corner of the doorway/opening is even a little worn away! So thanks for the suggestion :)
I also can't believe he just...
Hey there!
Whilst bathing my boy today I noticed one little part above his leg was a lighter cream colour than the rest. Out of curiosity I rubbed the other side thinking it may be a build up of dirt.
Upon researching, I feel like this may have been keratin. I'm now questioning if this might...
While i would love to be able to make positive changes e.g. terracotta saucer... i already use one :') ive been soaking him every day and he seems more energetic but he hasnt eaten yet. And i may try changing the saucer to see if he will drink, as i havent seen him drink from this lately and...
Hes 5 going on 6 years old now, ive had him for 4 of those years (we got him when he was 1 and a half but dont know exact hatch date) so not a baby anymore
32°c under his basking spot and 20°c at the cool end.
I dont have a humidity measurer but he has orchid bark mixed with coco coir substrate that we mist lightly 3-4 times a day.
He usually gets soaks 2 or 3 times a week but i will admit its been about 5 days since his last soak :/
Heard my hermanns making some strange noises today and looked to see him vomiting kale and dandelion. Now when ive put him in to bathe he wont stop drinking. He has a constant supply of fresh water in his enclosure so im not sure why...
Should i take him to a vet? Its the only time ive ever...
I noticed my little meat pie was showing slight signs of pyramiding.
I have started to bathe him every other day, put a cover over his enclosure and mist the enclosure a few times each day.
Is there anything else i can do?
And is there a way to measure humidity accurately?
P.S. Some of the...
Hi guys :)
I accidentally bought coarse orchid bark for my tort today who was in desperate need of a clean out and substrate change. I always mix my orchid bark in with some coco coir. I was wondering if this bark is too coarse for him, he seems to be walking on it as normal but ive not seen...
Hi there,
Im building my Hermanns tort (5 years old) a new table with a plexi glass top, the table will have 2 floors to it so that he can have as much space as possible now hes growing a bit too big for his current table (4ft by 4ft). In total with the new table he will have 6ft by 6ft space...
Unfortunately as far as ive seen the only heat mats available in the uk, especially around me, are the unsafe ones. So id say it's worth not risking it if you're unsure @Viscardi98
Dont use a heat mat!! Too dangerous if their claws poke into them!! Im in the UK too and for my Hermanns i use a CHE (ceramic heat emmitter) on a thermostat for ambient temperature day AND night . A 65 watt flood bulb to create a raised temperature area during the day time (look at reccomended...
I was just about to reply to this asking about orchid bark! Thankyou [emoji16]
My local pet store sells big bags of the ochid bark for a similar price to their chippings as well i think...
Will i have to check ingredients for anything specific to avoid or should it all be the same?
Hey guys! Just looking for a second opinion, my hermanns tortoise (originally on topsoil) was struggling with getting little particles of soil stuck in his eyes and it would only come off in soaks or if i washed it out. Ive last minute switched him over to beech chips which we had spare from our...
Sorry i didnt update earlier, vet says the formation of the scab led to a build up of dead cells around the area, he scraped it off, torts having ointment applied twice a day and soaks increased to every day until it's all cleared up :)
It was a piece of hay, came straight out as soon as i noticed it, he's booked in the vets now so i will keep it clean til he goes in and hopefully ill get some antibiotics from them, thanks for your help :)
It is dry, i havent noticed any puss doing what you've said but it is visibly swollen right at the corner of his mouth as the red mark extends out past his jaw, as does the cheek above it, its easier to see when his mouth opens but very difficult to get a picture of that unfortunately :/
Thankyou
The red mark doesnt appear to be a scab if im honest, if it is then its really attached on there, so i am worried that it will hurt him too much if i have to use force to rip it off.
