    New baby Hermann's tortoise, Hermoine

Thanks for the suggestions and support -- I was combining the food and water dish, but will separate the food onto a rock.

    New baby Hermann's tortoise, Hermoine

I just received a baby Hermann's tortoise from tortoisesupply.com. He/she is only about 1.5" long, but started crawling around and eating pretty voraciously after a brief soak. I'm calling it Hermione, in hopes it's a girl. Food: I offered it a shred of organic romaine lettuce, dandelion...

Outdoor habitat for 2 female russian tortoises

Just thought I'd post a picture of the outdoor habitat for my two female russian tortoises, Poppy and Petunia. Context: I adopted Poppy and Petunia from a local rescuer in Sept 2016. They're each about 6"x5" in size. The more dominant one, Poppy, weighs almost 2 lbs. Petunia is shyer and...

I am thinking about getting a Hermann's as well. I'm curious to know where you ordered Leo from?

Russian Tortoise lays eggs 6+ months after male companionship

About 6 months ago, I bought two female Russian tortoises who had been kept with a male. The seller rescues tortoises and then sells them, and he warned me that they might lay eggs. I've kept them in an indoor enclosure over the Colorado winter, and I took them outside this afternoon to get some...

Transitioning Russians to indoors for winter

Sorry for the delayed response -- you both gave me a lot of good information. I've continued to move them outdoors / indoors as they seem to demand (daytime temperatures are in the high 70s). They are completely separated, except if they encounter each other during explorations in the yard (but...

Transitioning Russians to indoors for winter

I recently adopted two female Russian tortoises (I know, not ideal to keep together...but I have a very large enclosure, and they don't interact at all). I live in the Colorado Front Range, where winter temperatures often go below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I've talked to other tortoise owners in the...

rescued tortoise lethargic and leaving spots of blood

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I have been greatly encouraged by this forum as a resource for information, and decided to take the plunge again. I found two young-ish female russian tortoises from a local guy who has been rescuing and caring for tortoises for many years. They...

rescued tortoise lethargic and leaving spots of blood

Very sad to report that I decided to have him euthanized. I found a vet who was familiar with reptiles, and the prognosis was not good. You were correct about the pinkish tone and signs of being septic. Worse yet, when she pressed lightly on his belly, blood started dripping out between the...

rescued tortoise lethargic and leaving spots of blood

Thanks for all the advice. He seems to be doing better under the new Mercury Wave Bulb. He lifts himself up while in the soak, and seemed interested in the dissolved Mazuri food pellets last night. His front legs also seem less puffy now. If he makes it, we're going to call him Lazarus. :-)

rescued tortoise lethargic and leaving spots of blood

He's still alive, occasionally opening his eyes and trying to move. He's able to turn himself around, but doesn't do much more than that. I want to think that the baby carrot bath (with some liquid calcium) is helping -- can see evidence of new stool emerging. I submerged him a few times...

rescued tortoise lethargic and leaving spots of blood

Thanks, Sarah. This is just the first day that I've had him, and it was overcast and a bit chilly this morning, so I'll put him out in the sun as soon as it warms up. My plan is to have him in an outdoor enclosure with a sunny side and a shady side. It's about 8' x 6' with about 2' of soil under...

rescued tortoise lethargic and leaving spots of blood

I purchased a Russian Tortoise yesterday from a family that said they'd had him for 5-6 years, but they clearly knew nothing about tortoises (and I don't have a lot of room to talk as I've never had one before, but just felt like this guy needed to be rescued): He was living in a glass...
