TORTOISE STRESS. ARE THEY REALLY THAT FRAGILE

I'm still relatively new to this forum, so I'll specify that my critters are boxies and pond turtles, not tortoises, so apologies if my view doesn't apply to tortoises specifically. I've had most of my adults for 20+ years, and think nothing of grabbing, dragging, and digging (with fingers)...

    Intergrade?

Her scute arrangement and coloring have a prehistoric-retro vibe going. Cool.

    Intergrade?

I guess I can understand. My love of turtles began as a kid growing up at a lake, so "turtle" meant "water turtle" - namely painteds - to me. I'd never even met a box turtle in person until I was out of college. I don't recommend turtles as pets to anyone, and actually try a bit to talk them...

3 Toeds- Photos from the pen

Mine is fenced too - it was the first thing I did when I moved in to keep two beagles safe -- but fences can't stop everybody. The bears just plow right through the chain link part, or break the cedar part climbing over. If I see one in the yard I open all the gates and try to direct it toward...

    Intergrade?

No offense to slider lovers, but what was that kid thinking? That's such a beautiful, alert-looking turtle! I definitely concur that there was a three toe - Eastern hookup.

More than 10 invasive turtles of a kind that cannot be legally kept

:-( I get why you say that, but it still makes me sad that the turtles suffered because the humans were at fault.

3 Toeds- Photos from the pen

Outstanding! It depresses me that my outdoor structures look more like cages for security reasons. Your open-top setup is my dream, but my yard is a playground for bears, hawks, owls, black rat snakes, and an occasional raccoon, muskrat, or whatever. I'm afraid too many predators could bypass an...

    Snake necks

Room for indoor ponds played a big factor in choosing the house my husband and I bought nine years ago. I'm not sure knows that though. ;-p

    Colouring of shell

Wow, that's quite a size difference! He's a determined lad ... but aren't they all! Samson (my avatar) would rather go after the girls than eat. I have to feed him separately to make sure the food isn't gone by the time he gets around to it -- and so the poor ladies can eat in peace.

Can you guess what this is?

All I can say is, I'm scrolling through this and smiling like a doofus because I'm so happy I'm not the only one who spends all their time and money building (and rebuilding) turtle habitats. I'm a teacher, so the first project every summer, spring, and winter break involves overhauling...

    Colouring of shell

This is Floyd. He was a drab beige from head to toe at birth, so I thought mom was Frisky, my three-toed, but now that the dark brown coloring is coming out I can tell it was Martha, my Eastern. What's really cool is that the coloring/patterns are really dark, but they look like they're trapped...

I thought the same thing regarding the bright coloring.

    Safe to eat?

Yep. I'm in the Poconos right now, but when I get home I'll try to post a clearer pic. It's hard to do because they won't stop moving. Maybe if I make it curl up that'll help.

    Flavomarginata

I have a mated pair (age 20+) five of their offspring (4 juveniles, 1 hatchling). I have always considered them to be semi-aquatic. As for shell/size differences, I've found the males to be more slender and taller (higher dome), whereas the females are much broader, heavier, and shorter. The...

Northern NJ. They're really pretty when they curl up - all red and yellow.

    Safe to eat?

Centipede -- thanks -- I didn't count. ;) It's nearly the size of my little finger. For someone who's into bugs, it would make a great specimen, actually, because it's hefty and really beautiful. I never saw these until I moved into the house I'm in now, and I can hardly dig a scoop of earth...

    Safe to eat?

Does anyone know for sure if this millipede is safe for boxies to eat? They're all over my yard. My skunk ate one and seemed to find it tasty. I tried Googling it, but find too many conflicting IDs. I don't want to offer it if it has a toxin or of it can bite.

    Time to stop lurking...

and start posting :). I've been visiting for ages -- especially, of course, ogling and taking screenshots of habitats. Do we ever stop building habitats? Don't answer that. -- and I was surprised when I realized that I hadn't ever created a login name. I'm clare, I'm in northern NJ, and...
