Thanks for the well wishes! I wanted that hermanns so bad! Haha I hope he's treating you well, Brent showed me a pic of the setup you made for him. Looks awesome dude
I forgot to mention. He does get a fair amount of dandelion, shaved butternut squash. And occasional mazuri. The rounding of the shell would take a long time to occur, right? As in years with age? I don't have a decent "before" pic. But it seems to me he has improved
No, he's solid throughout. I never got the impression that he had MBD. He is healthy as an ox now, might be a bad photo angle. He's round beneath the peaks, and shell including plastron is in good firm consistency.
I rescued a 6 y/o Sulcata about a year ago. Named him nacho. He has moderate pyramiding and had a pretty bad R.I. The previous owner fed only grocery store greens. Unsure of the UV status, but was kept outside in the summer at least. After antibiotic treatment the R.I cleared up and appetite...
hey guys,
I have been thinking a lot about the future of my tortoises, and due to their longevity it brings me to "how old will I be when..." I'm 24 now, just bought a bunch of babies. As cute as they are, as an owner you naturally can't wait to see them as adults and at breeding age. So I...
Hi Yvonne,
I thought I would follow up with the fan idea. I put it in just to try it, to see if I noticed any changes. It oddly seemed to trigger an immediate feed response from the whole group? Not that I'm concerned about their appetite because they are constantly stuffing their faces. It was...
Congrats on the new purchase, hopefully you have as much fun with your baby as I'm having with mine so far. I have a temporary indoor enclosure for my 4 yearlings that seems to be treating them very well. Just a screen top short tank. I've placed cardboard at the sides and back (they seem to...
Hey guys, I'm in southern Ontario. Not as cold as you guys typically, but still rely on supplemental foods for my scaley grazers in the cold months. I go to feed stores for my Sulcata, they have Timothy/alfalfa cubes with adequate protein and fat content. He seems to respond really well to it...
yea I am questioning possible MBD in the larger of the two. The smaller one looks a bit better. I was planning to use them as breeders. That being said, I've adopted torts before with MBD and with proper care have proven to be some of my most rewarding pets. So imperfections don't necessarily...
hey guys,
I am in discussion with someone regarding the purchase of a so called 1.1 pair of Greeks. Info is vague, but the price is right. Even though the specimen being sold as "the" female looks to have some shell deformities. Please help me out here because they both look females to my...
Yea. I'm not a fan of the CHE myself, they seem too intense and a bit dangerous. I use an under the tank heating cable, in conjunction with a couple of 60 watt black light bulbs. The heating cable gets it a bit too warm so I have it on a timer for 2 hrs on 2 hrs off. Under the tank heat also...
Hello tortoise folk,
My name is Matt, I'm from Windsor, Ontario Canada. I am relatively new to torts, but have so far been the most pleasurable herps I've ever kept. I have a six year old, rescue male Sulcata named Nacho 23lbs, he's in my pic with the dogs. I just purchased a quartet of Burmese...
That's what I assumed, it's a shame, they seem like they would be a lot of fun to work with. Thanks for the clarification. Keep my fingers crossed that they make a recovery!
Sorry for my northern ignorance. As a Canadian, I am curious. Is there any captive bred desert or gopher tortoise available in the pet trade? I know they are threatened and indigenous, just wondering if anyone is working with them in captivity, or if it's even allowed for that matter. Thanks eh
Just an update. Using a deep, disposable tin casserole dish. With a hole cut out, and flipped upside down. I've been able to bring up the temps to the mid eighties and 90% humidity throughout. Eye problem solved! Just wondering, since the humidity seems ample. Would it cause any disruption to...
