Sherman (3 yrs old, 1lb 9.5 oz) has been barely eating for a couple of weeks, so I brought her to the vet (wherein she pooped, finally getting the fecal sample I've been waiting for), and just now, I noticed she was prolapsed a bit. She was able to withdraw her parts fully when I picked her up...
Does anyone put a water treatment in their tort's water? I mean the kind that might go in an aquarium to keep bacterial growth down.
I fill Sherman's dish every day or 2, but there's still a slimy growth that develops on the bottom/sides that I'm not crazy about. I use "city" tap water.

The problem is, I haven't changed her uv/heat level since summer! I even put a night time red lamp for xtra heat only at night like I did last year. I don't have the knowledge or confidence to risk sticking her in a box in the basement for 5 months...it just bothers me. Last year, I don't...
I tried this last summer and he wasn't old enough to really tell...now he's 2 1/2 yrs old, 500+ grams and has a cpl of 5 1/2". Can we tell yet? I'll take some more pics if this isn't clear enough.
I read this somewhere, but don't recall where. Sherman (2 1/2 yrs old) loves the sun, I think, a little too much! He's 400+ gms in weight and has a carapace length (straight) of roughly 5 1/4" or 13.5 cm. Eats like a pig, too!!
Is this OK? He won't touch his cuttlebone, but will eat any spilled suppliment like it was candy. Can I just give him a little pile instead of going thru the trouble of dusting his food every day? I'll just grind up the cuttlebone and give that to him in a dish.
BTW, Sherman is a 7 month...
My 3 mo old Marginated (which I've had for a week) wants to 'hide' all day. If I take him out, he eats like a horse and is active, but I have to take him out.
He sits in his hide until at least noon when I take him out of it.
His 5.0 UvB light comes on at about 7AM and his 'red' light stays...
They seem to be a logical choice, but I haven't seen them listed as either good or bad for my Marginated. (My care sheet from the breeder included Hermann's with the Marginated tortoises) I've only had him 3 days and he's been eating like a pig since the day he arrived.
Anybody know?

Still building my enclosure....I've got a 100W infrared lamp for 24 hour use for my forthcoming tort, but the socket (which mounts to wood) gets so hot you can't touch it. Anyone experience this? Any tips on mounting it a different way so I don't have to worry about the house burning down...
I'm still working on my enclosure for my upcoming Redfoot purchase, and see hay as a substrate for some other species of torts. How about for the redfoot? Can't wait to finally get one. 2 weeks of building and research so far......at least another week to go.

Hermann's-small
Russian (kinda small)
Redfoot (my choice so far)
