Those are the standard 300 gallon stock tanks. They're ~6' x 5' on the flat sides x 2' as advertised. There is a little drain plug in the bottom on a flat side, I think its 1 1/2", I drilled mine for a 3" bulkhead for plumbing.
What kind of turtle? Slides/cooters/maps are all good with as much water as you will give them. As long as you provide a place or places for them to cling to plants or rocks near the surface you can't give them too much. For mud/musk turtles you can stay a little smaller. But with sliders...

Would y'all recommend putting in some filter/pool sand in part or all of the stock tank so it can burrow in and feel more secure? Or should that wait until the plastron is more under control as far as fungus/sores?
Ya its interesting to think about what it is that THEY sense when that happens. When the aquatic turtles wake up, its never me tapping on the glass or anything like that. I bend to look at them and they just know. I'm guessing something about the way the other fish/turtles in the tank start...
Good evening!
How often do y'all notice your turtles sleeping? At night, during the day, doesn't matter.
With all my previous turtles (Southern painted, razorback musk, Mississippi map, giant mexican musk) I noticed them sleep pretty rarely except when I came up to them late at night when the...
I didn't notice anything when they fell. Its possible that it was because I was so surprised to see a 1" long turtle in the middle of the floor with my 1 year old running around I didn't take the time I normally would to do a full inspection. But I've never noticed anything before in terms of...
Hi all,
I noticed this morning that one of my Rio Grande cooters has a decent dimple or dent in its shell. It looks like the center line was just pushed off to their left side. It is one of 4 in the tank and none of the others show this at all. The other 3 have normal, symmetric, high-domed...
Hi all,
I'm curious about sexing rio grande cooters. Generally turtles/tortoises can't be sexed until a few years of age. I noticed among my 4 Rio Grande cooters, two are quite a bit larger than the others. The large ones have relatively flat plastrons while the smaller ones have a relatively...
I like the black 1" square, you can plan it to only have slots on the sides you use, or just get it with the slots all the way around which is what I do. The silver (non-anodized) is a bit cheaper, and looks good. I just like the sleek black look.
I set it on top of the aquarium, but mine don't...
I assembled mine, but the parts I measured the lengths of aluminum we needed and purchased it from 8020.net
https://8020.net/
The extruded aluminum:

The flat plates...
I've seen several of the plastic light diffuser held together areas work. I've really liked the look of the extruded aluminum with acrylic panels on mine. Its a little pricier, but the assembly is dead simple. Its 8020.net parts. It helps that my aquarium has ~1" thick edges rather than the...
Order was the level I was thinking of. I've never been good at keeping the philogeny stuff straight. Isn't that part consistent regardless of the local terminology?
I'm pretty sure it's all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises.
Tortoises are a pretty small sub section of the turtle family or whatever is above family in that whole philogeny thing.
I have noticed recently the Rio Grande cooters in the indoor 180 gallon aquarium like to spend some time brushing the tops of their shells on things. It reminds me of that post the other day where a turtle scrubbed their butt on a suction cup brush in their aquarium. It turns out cholla cactus...
Unfortunately, the turtle showed no signs of movement of breathing after a full day of being dry docked. I think this one goes in the loss column. Hopefully lessons learned improve future husbandry and nothing is in vain.
