    Microchipping does work! Eventually...

I am the one that fostered him, the News Article was not that accurate, as are most things in the News :-). I found Eddie at a home in a very remote area SW of my town Maricopa. I am the person on call for PHS for my area for wildlife or exotic removal. I honestly thought it was going to...

    salmonella poisoning

I think all reptiles carry it, I know torts and iguanas do, I am not sure on snakes or other lizards. Make sure you just clean really well with a 10% bleach solution on indoor enclosures. Also, there are other ways of getting it. Have your animals fecal tested if you want, you should be...

article on 100lb Sulcata found in AZ desert

Hey everyone is allowed an opinion in the end I guess. If they were doing anything unethical they would not have all the Govt and society support, certifications, and awards. They are also getting funding and licensing for venom research lab.

article on 100lb Sulcata found in AZ desert

Just to clarify, PHS is not stating they have to many, they still have plenty of room for growth and the Sulcatas do not cost much other then manpower that is 90% volunteer. The $10/ was the highest, I was under the impression that was a good price since most ads for large Sulcatas over...

article on 100lb Sulcata found in AZ desert

I see what you mean, I think breeding part is just part of having them in the sanctuary. It is what it is I guess. Until we have a decent way to neuter them, not sure what else to do then to euthanize any hatchlings. Selling the hatchlings is funding the rescue/sanctuary, I keep useing that term...

I would think so, its ~$10/lb. What is the issue with that, all or most rescues charge an adoption fee. While the sulcatas are not that expensive to maintain, they do need electricity, lots of volunteer work, and we buy hay but rely on donations for produce from local stores and restaurants.

    Tortoise funny moments

There is this one male that will rush and push around a specific gray trashcan, I usually have an odd chuckle when they mount a cinder block.

So what is the other option though? I mean if people give up a pet, and we cannot find a sanctuary or rescue for them. The only option I can see is euthanasia.

    Corn Salad?

Yes I think it would be fine, but like any diet you need to have variety. I actually like this plant and plant it, its becoming really popular since its easily grown and has a nice spicy tang to it. I would think its akin to dandelion.

article on 100lb Sulcata found in AZ desert

PHS is a good rescue, I volunteer up there 2-3 times a month. They have received multiple awards from Arizona Fish and Game, have an active NGO status, and have various approved educational grants and activities. Do they have lots of sulcatas, yes tons, they get adopted and rescued on a constant...

    Band-Aid Theory

I am a real green horn in tort keeping, I have had other reptiles of course, but still a real amature. So let me talk about from the outside a bit. I think what people are being confused on is that there is no water in torts environment, this is untrue, even for DTs. From morning dew to mud...

    Mushrooms?

Mushrooms grow almost anywhere, to be honest I cannot think of a case where a tort would not come in contact with mushrooms or fungi. Now come in contact with a store bought mushroom is a differant story of course.

Need a vet just in case

What is wrong with his motto? Very few Vets have the luxery of pinpointing one type of animal if that's what you mean. Things to look for with a vet IMHO. - If you have a large species like a Sullie, see if they have a mobile clinic - Do they specialise in exotics - Are they associated...

    Thinking of getting another Sully

They work best in large communities, or alone with maybe one other in a large yard, or a huge yard with multiples. But you really cant judge temperament till they hit puberty though, some males will attack garbage cans and mount cinder-blocks, others really don't care. Females can be...

    Weight Gain

At that size you should be careful to make sure they get some grass in their diet. For indoors you can try any of the dried rabbit grasses that are not treated, outdoors just let them munch on organic grass and weeds. Mine are about 50% grass to other stuff.

How to prevent him from flipping over?

Tortoises really need an exciting environment and enjoy exploring and learning little bits of their enclosure. Mine have a 10ksgft yard and still know each part and what each part has to offer, even the timing of my sprinklers or sunlight position.

How to prevent him from flipping over?

I find that some torts learn how to right themselves, also they need some topography to help them with the process as well. He could have tried to climb on his hide and wiggled himself to the other side. Also, some torts are rock climbers, or enjoy higher elevations. It looks like he needs...

    can torts get sun burn?

When we rescue a tort who is raised indoors there is certainly a color change when left out in the sun. The only issue is we have to be careful with overheating since they tend to absorb more heat then they can react to.
