    Just thought I'd share this.

That's why I keep a snow shovel right outside the backdoor all year.

What goes into having a Sulcata?

I would suggest waiting for now. Main reason is because of your age. You are going to have many life changes that you may not have control of in the years to come. If you really want a tortoise now I would suggest a Hermanns for where you live. I keep Hermanns and they do fine in my environment...

    200 watt Heat Panel

No, the only heaters on are the mats and electric oil filled radiators. The radiant panels I use max out at 200 watts. I use lamp dimmers to reduce the wattage down to coincide with the other heaters when necessary. This past winter the panels were never necessary to be used.

    200 watt Heat Panel

You may be over estimating the wattage needed to heat a well insulated house. It's not cold here this morning, 62F right now with strong winds. I just checked the wattage that the 4 houses are using and the total is 494 watts. I also figured out what the total wattage would be if every heat...

    Kasey got a haircut

Kasey is 16 years old and no longer keeps herself groomed.I have a couple pups that were due for some shots so I had the mobile vet come out and take care of Cowbird and Sarah shots. Kasey had to be sedated for her shaving and everything went fine. She now looks like a possum, My vet has a good...

    200 watt Heat Panel

I agree with @Tom on the 700 watt electric oil heaters. I keep sulcatas where we have real cold winters on the east coast. Here's a couple things I figured out, The oil heaters work best sitting caddy corner in a corner than sitting flat against a wall. Better air circulation throughout the...

Grave Mistake: Dog punctured my Tortoise's shell - pls learn from my mistake

I appreciate your opinion, but I think that you are wrong in many aspects. Yes I'm not a professional dog training. I guess that makes me an average backyard dog owner, with years of experience with dogs. I got my first dog in 1957 his name was Duke and he died in 1974 and he never chewed a...

Grave Mistake: Dog punctured my Tortoise's shell - pls learn from my mistake

I don't agree with no dogs with turtles and tortoises. But it takes time for you to get the pups to understand that the tortoises or turtles are members of the pack. This is something I've been doing for many years. Right now I have 5 dogs that won't harm the tortoise's and turtles in their...

The "thing" that gets to me.

One thing that bothers me is snake ignorance. You aren't born with the fear of snakes, people are taught to fear and kill any they come across no matter how harmless it is. Around here every snake is suspect to be a copperhead by people that just don't know about or like snakes. This happened in...

    sulcata & hay

I lived in Palmetto for a while back in the 70s and prier to that I spent a lot of time in Bradenton so I have an idea what your weather is like. To help the growth and weight gain of your tortoise is to build him a small heated house with some bottom heat to help keep his core temperature up...

    sulcata & hay

I wouldn't worry about the weight. The new growth looks good. I don't feed store bought hay, I feed grasses and weeds from my yard. In the spring and summer they get fresh cut greens. I harvest the grass and weeds during the growing seasons and dry them out and during the colder months I...

    33yo Alligator Seized

How about a fox. Skunks aren't allowed in Virginia but foxes are according to a fox rescue sanctuary in Minnesota. They tried to get me to adopt one a couple years ago. I had a female skunk years ago when they were legal to keep. Neat animals sorta like a cat.

    Ordering Food

I have a few Herman's and mine are mostly fed weeds from my yard. If you have access to an untreated area that would be nice. Mine don't care for grasses but they love the weeds. And opuntia cactus cut into small stripes, and later in the summer the cactus fruit. If you can find mulberry leaves...

Hey meat eaters and snake fans, what say you?

Alligator meat is a big business today and has been for decades. I visited a gator farm in the 80s that were farming them as a food source. It had very large green house's just like a plant nursery. The young gators were separated by size and being raised off the ground with constantly changing...

    Water dish for large species

Here's another idea for a watering hole that I tried back in 2012 for some young sulcatas. It worked great. It's a piece of shower pan liner about 3x6ft in size. To clean it I would pick the liner up on one end and lift it and the water would run out. Then I would lay in the grass and clean it...
