    Outdoor Housing

My sulcata is over a year old, weighs 1 1/2 pounds, and is about 6 inches long. Is he too young to be strictly housed outdoors, at least for the summer months? I live in New Orleans so the weather is perfect most of the year.

    Housing Sulcata Outside

When do you recommend housing a sulcata exclusively outdoors? My sulcata is slightly over a year old and spends several hours outdoors each day in a kiddie pool enclosure. He seems much happier and active outdoors. I have read that it is best to wait until they are fairly large to keep them...

    Sulcata Shell Rot

Tom, the coco coir is fairly damp in his enclosure. I have the ideal warm and cool temperatures for his enclosure and he goes outside daily for a few hours at a time. I have been having difficulty achieving adequate humidity in his enclosure without having the substrate damp. And everyone...

    Sulcata Shell Rot

Do you think it would be a bad idea to replace his coconut coir bedding with the cypress mulch rather than only a top layer?

    Sulcata Shell Rot

Besides adding the dry cypress mulch, should I begin any sort of treatment such as anti-fungal cream? Thanks

    Help! Horrible Pet Store

Guys I need help dealing with a local pet store, Every now and then I visit the pet store to browse. In the past I have ignored the sub-par care of their tortoises due to my shyness and desire to avoid confronting management, but today I was exceptionally upset. There was a single baby...

    Terra Cotta Water Dish

Hello, I recently took the advice that I have seen online to use a large terra cotta plant saucer as a water dish for tortoises. When I fill it with water, it absorbs the water and remains constantly damp and eventually grows mold. Does anyone else have this problem? Could it just be a lower...

    I HATE pet stores

My local pet store has always been pretty favorable with me, pretty knowledgable with all of its animals. But they are horrible with tortoises. I walked in today and they were selling a medium sized sulcata with substantial pyramiding for $180. It was housed in a tank that was probably about...

    Air Holes?

To keep retain heat and humidity better, I just closed off the top of my enclosure with a sheet of plexiglass and sawed a hole out for the light fixture. Is it necessary to drill air holes for ventilation? I don't want too much heat and humidity to escape, but I dont want to suffocate him either...

    Need Enclosure Advice

I was thinking about that. Can I place heating lamps on the plexiglass? Im not sure how much of the heat will be blocked out by the glass.
