    Russian Tortoise adoption S.O.S. Help?

Hi there, and welcome! Just wanted to chime in with the advice above and mention to try to give her at least 5" of depth in the substrate to burrow into, as the Russians love to dig! Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have, because the people on this forum are very...

Happy 08' Group. From Lynn in Utah

Greetings Lynn, and welcome! I hope it wasn't my tribulations with our feisty little Farishta that put you off Russians ROFLMAO :P She adopted us just over a month ago and has had a steep learning curve adapting to our highly abnormal family and lifestyle (apartment full of musicians and...

    A penny for your thoughts?

Thanks everyone! I'll start by adjusting the lighting to see if that helps. Recommendations for “tried and true” lights are most welcome. I had a feeling the hot spots were a little too hot, and I’d be glad to try leaving one heat source off during the night because my...

    A penny for your thoughts?

Still a bit at a loss about Farishta…. Hi everyone, Although Farishta has been eating somewhat normally recently, I am still not convinced that all is well…. Here are a couple pix of her current digs: It's like this now minus the bark which I took out: The...

How'd you get your start with tortoises?

I have always been a “cat person” (in fact our boy cat is convinced that I am really a big cat with no fur!), but had been interested in tortoises for many years. I grew up in San Diego, CA and a friend I met in college had a tortoise. However about the time some ten years ago that...

    UGH!!! I'm sooo mad!

ROFLMAO!!! Sounds like just the sort of thing that would happen to me….Actually at one point I discovered that when I mismatched the threads when screwing in the heating unit and tried to back it out, I noted that the socket was unscrewing itself from the rest of the assembly and got so...

    My New Leopard Has Arrived!

She's absolutely beautiful, Dee! where did you get her? I had been thinking that once we get our tortoise management plan well in hand, I would like to get a leopard next - perhaps it's the feline connection, but they really are beautiful torts.....;) -BK

    Training your redfoot to eat

That is too cool for words!! This weekend I'll try out some potential dining sound tracks and see if I can condition Farishta to eat to music, but first I have to find a way to get her to eat in her enclosure in the first place....

    Mom in need of HELP!

Hi there JamJam, and welcome! I’m afraid I can’t at this point offer much in the way of sage advice because I am also a brand-new tortoise mom, but my basic sense from your post is as follows: 1) The runny nose – it sounds like Waffle might very well have a respiratory...

Is there a tortoise shrink in the house?!

Hi there, Yes, it’s Brenda again with another Farishta “incident report”….. Refer to my post titled “what do I do now?” below. I followed Danny’s advice and dug her out and tried to get her eating, which she did the next day, but not quite as I...

    What do I do now???

Good morning everyone, Well, I finally got a chance to change the substrate of Farishta’s indoor enclosure last Wednesday (now it’s sand/bed-a-beast/aspen mix) and got all excited about her finally having started eating that day and taking a nice, long “run” around...

New Setup - Good read for beginners

RE: New Setup WOW!!! Now I really have "enclosure envy" (and resourcefulness regret). Sure wish I'd found this forum and your wonderful post when our little Farishta wandered into our yard the beginning of this month before I went on a clueless shopping rampage and spent us homeless trying...

    New Christmas Housing

Great set-up, and LOVE that pic of Comet in her salad! Farishta got a new remodel for Christmas too, and I'll post the pics soon.

    Substrate

Crazy1, Is fir bark toxic to torts? I read that redwood is. If so then I will take it out of my enclosure. During an interim remodel of Farishta's house I put a mound of repti-bark in, and she seemed to enjoy playing with it (she's big on redecorating), i.e., came home from work the next day...
