Thanks Tom, that eases my mind. @WithLisa He hasn't gotten outside in a few months as it has been cold around here. During the summer though he gets a few hours of sun each day for ~4 months if I can help it. Looks like this spring/summer I'll have to ease back on the sunscreen
Hi everyone. I took some photos of my tortoise. Overall, I think he looks pretty healthy and he's active and eating and all that. The underside of his shell (the plastron) has some pinkish coloration to it. It's been coming and going for about 9 months or so now with no other signs that I've...
You truly do not. You may understand your own perspective, but you understand very little about the evolutionist perspective. It's very apparent from your responses and input to this "discussion." I've recommended a book for you all to take a gander at. It's very clear to me that you don't...
I don't think you have an understanding of the nature of the scientific argument behind evolution. I could do what you just did and fabricate plausible explanations for the evolution of an egg tooth and I could still say evolution is more plausible than creationism. Scientific explanation arises...
My tortoise did the carpet dance the first time he was set on the carpet, so I think it was just a new texture to him and he wanted to experience the full sensation. The first video I think the tortoise was not happy, because my tortoise gets angry when I do exactly what that owner did.
The formation of the egg tooth would not have developed in turtles, but in an ancestor. This ancestor would most likely be at least the first common ancestor shared between crocodilians, birds, and turtles (all of which have an egg tooth). Some lizards and snakes, as well as the egg-laying...

Browsing CL and found this. This poor turtle's living conditions are in-line with what I'd have to consider animal abuse. I live near the area but cannot take in and provide the proper enclosure for that turtle, but someone needs to give...
I use cypress mulch and it works really well. I have about 6 inches of it in the enclosure with some hills and valleys. It holds moisture pretty well, but I also added a bunch of spaghnum moss mixed in with for even better moisture retention.
Thanks Tom!
I'll reduce his dosage to twice weekly; I didn't realize too much calcium would stop absorption of other minerals, but that does make total sense.
I feed him everything in the Broadleaf Mix from Carolina Pet Supply as well as romaine lettuce, mazuri, and zoomed grassland...
Hey everyone. I've had Oscar for a few months now and he's gaining weight and growing about 1/4" SCL per month. I'm wondering how much calcium powder is too much. I give him the Calcium and D3 powder. No matter how much I offer he will always eat it all. I'm not sure if I'm giving him unhealthy...
Thank you everyone! HermanniHaven really is an interesting and informative site. I love all of the information that I can read about my tortoise! :P Thank you Chris for the ID.
Here are some photos. I'm guessing Oscar is not a Western solely based on the lack of a "keyhole" shape, which leaves Dalmation or Eastern. I'm not overly concerned about Oscar's subspecies, but I'd like to know a little bit more about him and I think it will be very interesting to know. Thanks...
I've been looking up the characteristics of different subspecies to try and figure out what Oscar's subspecies is. Oscar is only about 6 months old (I've had him for 2 months), and I'd like to know what he is. I could post pictures if necessary, but I'm just curious if I'll need to wait for him...
Hey everyone! I absolutely love my little guy, so I figured I'd make a post to see if I should be concerned. I've had Oscar for Almost two months now, and he hasn't grown the slightest bit. I don't have a scale to weigh him, but his length hasn't increased at all. His plastron is also still very...
Here a few more pictures of Oscar! He seems to be doing really well :tort:
cemmons, thank you! I really enjoy taking pictures of Oscar, so I have a bunch!
You all have wonderful looking Tortoises! Thank you all for sharing. Oscar is my first tort, so I'm very excited to be caring for him. Danielle, Tilly looks wonderful, hopefully she gets better soon!
Hey everyone. My girlfriend and I just got our first tortoise a few days ago, and I thought it would be cool if everyone posted pictures of their own Hermann's tortoises. Here's Oscar!
