I keep a different species known for being a little less prone to sparring than sulcatas, but the males often mount one another, for sport and satisfying urges I suspect. So long as neither is terrorizing or injuring the other, probably nothing to worry about.
This heavily calcified and almost certainly non-fertile egg was laid today. It is the fifth egg laid singly. Is calcifying like this indicative of anything?
Got our third egg yesterday. Without an x-ray or ultrasound maybe no way to tell if more are in there. I have read that a car ride can stress the mother enough to get things moving but not really the direction I’d want to go for a few reasons.
It was just on top of the ground. We weren’t expecting eggs yet and hadn’t really provided great conditions to lay them. That’s since being remedied. That lone egg has started diapause.
That’s a shame. They’re really nice fluorescent tubes in a good reflector. Can a larger light be installed in your AP cage? And how do you like your AP cage? I’m waiting for one to be manufactured having ordered about a month ago. Everyone seems to say they’re worth the wait.
My Burmese star laid a single egg a few days ago but hasn’t laid any since. She is about 2950 grams so slightly smaller than when this species typically starts laying. I’m not sure if she produced just the one egg or may have more that she hasn’t laid yet. I’m concerned about her becoming...
Did you get the T5 or T8 version? The T5 is worlds better, especially with a good reflector (another variable). Then the Arcadia tubes come in different strengths/intensities. These numbers refer to Arcadia T5 tubes in a Sunblaster Nanotech reflector, which is just very shiny and amplifies the...
Only because you insisted...
The smallest 5 and first shown are with me and range in age from 18 months or so to around four years. The largest three in the gray Vision cage are my original group and have gone to live with friends who bought into this dream to breed them when we started...
That’s amazing news, Gus! Congratulations! My early 2015 female laid a single egg yesterday as well. Must be that time of year!
Keep us posted on any other developments! You’ll possibly see signs of fertilization after a month’s diapause and a couple weeks of incubation as I understand it.
(The strings all around the tortoise in the first picture is the main reason I DON'T like coco coir. I've seen a couple different tortoises with dead legs due to hair/string/wire wrapped around the leg and cutting off circulation)
It’s dog fur because I put him on the carpet a moment while I...
Male, about four years old. Was kept outside in a western state much of the year before I got him so only about half the weight of similar-aged animals I’ve had indoors for years but showing concave plastron and massive tail at size mine started flashing. Has gained weight from 360g to over...
I understand that it’s normal healthy behavior and necessary for eventual breeding. It’s simply that some males seem to make a sport of flashing, and it grows a bit gratuitous at times.
I got one in three TSFs that turned out female. I had one TSF that flashed eagerly at around 400g onwards and the other male (also TSF) is a lot less macho and has only done it a handful of times. My newest male has only flashed half-heartedly, if at all, but I’ve only had him a bit over a week...
The AP cages look really nice, and seem to require less modification to be a good humid chamber than the 72”x36”x18” Vision cage I’m working on. May have to get those next. I’m just now trying out the Pro Heat radiant heat panels to see if I can use those instead of or as a complement to ceramic...
Very nice set-up. Apart from the strong initial aroma of the fir chips which seems to dissipate with time and dampening, I like orchid bark as a substrate too. Just wish they sold it in big bags like they did cypress mulch which stores here stopped stocking. I had similar results as you when I...
