Phoebe my hingeback and her 2 babies

I got Phoebe in early 2013 and she is a western hingeback (kinixys nogueyi). She's thought to be 30+ years old and a gorgeous grumpy lady :) She doesn't miss a trick and no wormies escape her! She'll eat anything that dares enter her realm, including hands (though she prefers toes!). She knows...

    Hatchling not gaining weight

One of hingeback hatchlings just isn't gaining weight and im at a complete loss as to what to do for the best. She is coming up 5 months old and I hatched her myself. She tore her yolk sac at birth and bled out a lot, twice! She is doing better and had turned a corner a few months ago. She is...

    Outside Enclosure for Hingebacks

I have hingeback tortoises and at the minute no outdoor enclosure for nice days. We had no yard last summer so she got supervised time in the front street or park. I've moved and we have a small yard, in an area that is slightly nicer and a tad safer :) I live on the Lancashire coast so its...

My two latest Nogueyi hatchlings :)

These are the babies that all hatched this last January. They'll be coming up to a year old now. Some photos are very recent, some are a few months old :) This is Mama Phubs (properly known as Phoebe). She's a grumpy old lady who loves her food - she'll be sat, at her feeding slate every...

My two latest Nogueyi hatchlings :)

Thought i'd introduce Naughty Norma and Dave Button. :) Button (the darker one) hatched quite early at a tiny 5g back in May and was very slow to start. I wasn't sure she'd make it really. She's still only 27g or so but she's turned a corner and doing much better :) The 1st + 2nd picture were...

    Introducing the hatchlings :D

Yeah, im giving him/her a chance to recover hatching, absorb the rest of the yolk sac and see how it is in a few weeks. My vet is 50 miles away ( i dont drive + have to go by bus) so i dont want to rush into taking her unnecessarily if it fixes itself. She'll go if its not sorted by the time...

    Introducing the hatchlings :D

Well baby 3 is out and the first two have eaten a worm each and a bite or two of fruit. Not huge amounts, but something at least :) Baby 3 seems to have a weird leg, and a friend who is a vet seems to think its an abnormality that she may grow out of or be have for life. We'll have to see...

    Introducing the hatchlings :D

No sign of the others yet, but they were all a good week or so behind in development anyway. I would expect them to start soon though. I've offered some greens daily and he's not interested yet. The egg sac has only just finished being absorbed so im not too worried. I was thinking of trying a...

    Introducing the hatchlings :D

So 2 of my 5 nogueyi eggs have now hatched. They were laid 18th august and the first one pipped new years eve. The 2nd pipped on the 5th :) Both of them had a large yolk sac so have remained in the incubator to absorb it. I've been giving them water regularly. Baby 1 - He pipped a year to the...

    nogueyi gravid behaviour?

Well, baby is doing well :) I've checked on him and he seems to have a yolk sac still attached thats a fair size. He's still tucked up in his egg, so hopefully he'll stay there till he's absorbed some more of it. He's adamant not to stay put and is pretty determined to have a walk around. Not...

    nogueyi gravid behaviour?

Well today is 131 days incubation and a few days ago i had to move them again which i didn't want to do :( We lost electricity at my mams house and had a bit of flooding. We had to move out for a few days with all electrics turned off so i brought them to my house where they'll stay. Im very...

    Care of newly hatched torts

I have hingeback (kinixys nogueyi) eggs currently at 116 days incubation and due to start hatching within the next month. I have only ever had adult tortoises, so i dont know how to care for babies, let alone newly hatched ones! I'd like to be prepared, so i was wondering if anyone can help me...

    nogueyi gravid behaviour?

So i unfortunately had to move house, 30+ miles away in a rickety old van on the 27th which meant moving my eggs. Luckily we all made it in one piece and seem to be doing ok. There have been quite a few developments since i last checked them, and i want to see if they're normal or if maybe the...

How do i tell if he is under/over weight?

He does feel very light compared to the female, even with the size difference (though she is gravid again, so not a fantastic comparison :) ) I'll keep an eye on him - do i need to encourage him to feed more to fatten him up? His appetite is quite poor, even though he is free of parasites and...

How do i tell if he is under/over weight?

My little George came to live with me in march and was already loosing weight before he arrived (he was very sick). We finally got him healthy and he's gaining weight at last - he was 560g and is now 610! He still feels too light compared to my female. Does anyone know what kind of weight i...

    nogueyi gravid behaviour?

My incubator is set at 28 with constant humidity of about 85+ but reads around 28.5 on the actual shelf. With these being my first eggs i thought it best to follow everyones advice and that seemed to be the temperature everyone suggested. :)
