Well, the last time 3 people said it's a female and 1 (Danny) said it's a male. The other strange thing is the behaviour: the other male always tries to mount this tortoise and it never escapes, never bites him etc. I know that males from the norhern part of the range tolerate each other but...
I've already posted some photos of this tortoise before here http://tortoiseforum.org/thread-10707.html (tortoise #2) and some of you said that it's a female, but I'm really confused cause it grew up and looks like the tail became longer. Could you guess again who is it? Male or female?
Thank you for your comments.
Tom, we didn't get any Pyxis babies yet but hope to get them in the future. At least our biggest female seems to be ready.;)

f burkart, these pictures were taken in Kazakhstan, actually russian tortoises don't live in Russia at all.
There are no farms breeding russian tortoises. Come on! 99% of tortoises are wild caught except a few breeders in US and Europe. There were some efforts to make a "farm" in Uzbekistan in 2001 but all they did were collecting eggs (from the wild) and raising juvenilles.
The situation with russian tortoises (Testudo horsfieldii) looks catastrophic. Actually these tortoises don't live in Russia at all but they do live in some former-USSR countries like Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Governments of these countries don't care about tortoises at all, looks...
RE: Welcome to TortoiseForum.org !
Hi! I live in Russia and I've been reading this forum for several months. I've been a tortoise-fan since my childhood when I got my first 2 russian tortoises. Currently I have several tortoises and a few turtles (12 total):
-3 chelonoidis carbonaria
-4...
"The name 'cherryheads' was coined for a form of red-tooted tortoise that typically (not always) has a red head, as well as several other distinguishing characteristics. At least some of these tortoises remain relatively small; these are apparently full grown and even rather-old specimens that...
Dear friends, please help me to determine sex of my 3 red footed tortoises:
1) This is 100% male and I put his photo here just to compare with the rest of my tortoises, his length is 20 cm (7.9 inches) His plastron is concaved, his tail is very long and he behaves like a male :P. He is 5-6...
