    Bioactive

Hi there... Just curious about the best bugs to toss in to make Sam's (Dalmatian tort) table bioactive? I'm not totally sure of the substrates my husband used, a mix of organic potting soil and something else I think. We're planning on changing it out soon and I wanted to put some bugs in at the...

    Outside housing in Rochester, NY?

Hi there! Is there anyone around here from Western NY who owns/breeds torts and keeps them outside? We have a Dalmatian tort right now, but would like to get her a mate, as well as another pair (housed separately as appropriate). But we'd very much like them to be outside. I know a guy in...

Oh! Omg. I hadn't seen before. I retract my comment. Good job Yvonne!

    Turbo without nail polish

I'm guessing the tort was marked by the breeder. Our Dalmatian came with a blue dot to signify her family line, should we want to get her a pal in the future and avoid inbreeding. I don't think her tort was plastered in nail polish. At least, I really hope so. I can't imagine coconut oil is bad...

    Humidity

Thank you... That's his concern, too much moisture, he's pretty good she's fine as is. But I need to worry lol.

So I keep thinking about Sam's enclosure. My husband built it, its in our dining room (of course, but, so are the salamanders). Our last tortoise, Gus, died of a prolapsed intestine at about 3/4 years. My husband is pretty sure he was chronically dehydrated. We had him in an enclosed reptile...

I read that as "having a SNEEZE"... Snooze is much cuter! I'd love to be that warm right now!

Gotcha... She's pretty dry by the time the lights go out. We don't do anything more til morning. Thanks though!

Funny thing... It's 55 today in good old Western NY, and Sam came out on her own for breakfast. Just sitting in the doorway of her hut looking as if "Uh... Hello? Why is there no food here?". How in the world does she know that it's warm out? It's still the same balmy 90 in her enclosure for...

@ascott...I should clarify. We're not misting at night, and her enclosure is open and well ventilated.

Lol, @katfinlou, thanks for the well wishes! If you have a decent grocery store around you (we're lucky enough to have Wegmans) you might be surprised at the yummy greens they have. Kale is another really good one for them. Sam isn't too into mustard greens, and I'm not sure about the collards...

Wow... I'm so happy to know I'm not the only paranoid tort owner! It seems we're all doing generally the same thing. We dragged Sam out this morning, gave her a good soak, abs plopped her in front of her food, which she ate readily. @Moozillion...my husband and I question the cucumber, but I...

Hi everyone! I just wanted to see if Sam's "hibernating" is normal. She turned 2 in September. Starting in October she started coming out for breakfast and then going back to bed all day, but when it warmed up outside (which it did a lot here this fall), even though she's inside, she'd resume...

    Shell problem?

Hi... I'm not sure how he looks, I don't know red foots well. I admire what you're doing and the lengths you're going to in order to help these little guys. Curious... Are you in a position to fully adopt them? Or am I wrong in assuming this is a rescue? I think offering to bring them home to...
