I agree, of course, that they don't have the ability to regulate weather in the wild, but by having a temperature gradient in the captive habitat they should be able to self-regulate within the range provided. I'm just curious if Russians would instinctively know to move to the colder side at...
I've noticed several posters on this forum recommend turning off heating fixtures at night. I always assumed that by providing a temperature gradient in his cage he would be able to self-regulate his temperature by relocating. I figured that he will always know what temperature he needs more...
My tortoise goes nuts over tomatoes. I have a video of him tearing into one and devouring every tiny morsel of it, getting the tomato guts all over his face. It's as gruesome as watching a lion eat an antelope.
He only gets them once and a while, and usually just one cherry tomato, though...
As long as your house isn't freezing and they are under your supervision, you should try letting them run around outside of their cage as well. My Russian loves getting out to stretch his legs. I try to give him a little bit of free range time every day. You might find that your tortoises are...
What a lovely, little, old man. I hope my Russian lives that long. It sounds like you did a great job nursing him back to health. He's lucky to have you.
Also - a 110 year old yellowfoot! I'd love to see pictures (especially the picture with the original owner).
That reminds me of my pets when I was a kid. My parents had an umbrella cockatoo (about 2ft tall) and a parrotlet (4 inches at best). The parrotlet would chase the cockatoo around without mercy and the cockatoo was absolutely terrified.
I love letting my little Russian scurry about the apartment whenever I get a chance. I've noticed that he seems to have an odd love of feet. If I'm standing at the sink washing dishes, he'll track me down from almost any room and climb back and forth over my feet incessantly. I've had friends...
Haha, yeah, Peter. The name of my little presidential darling is not gender specific, but I can't get away from thinking of him as a he (not that I don't fully support a female POTUS or two in the white house, hopefully in my lifetime). I'm generally not great at pronouns - I have a tendency to...
I live in Oakland, CA and have a 4ish year old Russian named POTUS. Yes, as in President of the United States. My girl and I were watching a lot of West Wing at the time. As a side note, POTUS is a female, but by the time he was old enough to sex, we'd gotten used to using the male pronouns. I...
Hi Jake,
Yes, I have some plans drawn up. I'm thinking 62"x24"x24", with a glass front, side vents, and a door that opens on the top. And this is optional, but I'm also thinking of having a platform on one side - maybe about a third of the way across with a ramp (properly protected of course...
I've been quite surprised by how quickly my tortoise grew. I've had him* for about two years now and he's easily doubled in size. He looks about the same size as yours, by the pictures (though his shell seems taller/rounder than yours does). I've also been curious about how old he was when I got...
Hello fellow tortoise enthusiasts,
I'm in the market for a new indoor enclosure and thought I'd see if there are any craftsmen/women in the SF/Oakland area who would be interested in a custom commission.
I have a quickly-growing, energetic Russian who needs a cage to fit her future adult...
