FRT need substrate! Since they are soft shelled they need substrate to completely submerge themselves under. This will help fungus growth become non existent. I use cichlid sand from PetSmart. Or use super super porous sand.
Yes in most cases, wherever a female is there is always a male or two always following behind. The more females i caught there was always a ton of males in the trap.
I was getting 20%female catch, based on 10 turtles I would have 2 out of ten being female and the rest male (80%). For the bait i had the most success within the first 12hrs of it being in the water....after that all it attracted was grass carp. I found that placing the traps out around 4-5am...

Calagur is an older name, but is classified as Batagur now, on the left is a female and right is a male on bottom picture. Very nice specimens. But nowhere close to being fully grown.
Don't eat the produce from aquaponics if you are using turtles, fish are a lot safer. If you do grow produce only grow it to feed the turtles. You run a high risk of contracting some gnarly protozoa....I only use fish in my aquaponics for this main reason.
Only thin about water plants is state laws, depending on where you are you may be severely restricted on what you can have. Best way to filter is to use a wet/dry filter.......or even a grated solids filter is the best.
