Can anyone board my sulcata for 5 days?!

Help!!! my house tented for termites in mid September! I have a 60lb female sulcata who lives outside but too close to the house and I don't want to take any chances! I will pay you well and provide lots of food. I live in northern San Diego. Email me at [email protected]

    Is this cactus safe

That is most definitely trichocereus pachanoi aka San Pedro cactus. I have over 50 on my property. The skin contains mescaline! It is used as a hallucinogen by shamans in the Andes. I wouldn't suggest giving it to your tortoise!

Multi-Species outdoor enclosure with heated house! PIC HEAVY

Great enclosure! One thing though. I have a similar enclosure for my sulcata. When she exits and enters her hide she scrapes her shell on the edges of the concrete. After a while it got pretty scuffed up. I glued little wooden strips that wrap around the edges of the blocks and that seemed to...

    PICKY EATER ( MAZURI CHOW)

Try mixing it with his greens in a bowl, after soaking the pellets. It's definitely a lot more calorie dense so you only need a pellet or two for a juvenile. Their tastes change as they get older. I couldn't get my sulcata to eat grass till she was 2 years old. Now she will knock me over to...

Working on a new outside enclosure!

You would be better off not pulling the grass and weeds. My enclosure is outside and has a block border. It's just plain dirt bottom with weeds and plants and grass. My sulcata keeps everything pretty trim. If you already pulled all the grass maybe you can plant a few clods of grass back into...

    best tortoise zoo display?

I agree about the San Diego zoo being one of the best. I live a few miles away and we go often. Recently they updated their reptile "Mesa". It came out great. They do a lot of multi species enclosures. I really love the smaller outdoor pens up near the snake building. One of them, my...

    Aloe plant

I didn't realize you we're in Scotland! I would say that aloe vera is probably what you have. Especially if it looks like cowboy Ken's plant. People eat aloe vera all the time. It is found in many supplements and homeopathic remedies. I'm sure that is what you have. In Southern California...

    Aloe plant

I agree that there are few tortoises that would be harmed by native aloes. I'm just a worry wart with toxic plants. ;-) I live in San Diego and Home Depot carries at least 15 species of aloe. 3 are toxic to humans. I go to nurseries all the time and see aloe vera on plants that may be part...

    Aloe plant

Remember guys, there are hundred of aloes species. The most common is aloe barbadensis, aka aloe vera. Aloe Vera (like the one in your pics) is a made up name. This variety and any hybrids (blue elf etc...) are edible and safe. As are most African aloes. There are, however, several very...

[split] Wild caught or Captive bred?

This thread is crazy, but awesome! Both sides have good points. Though, with terrestrial chelonians, I feel there is no sustainable harvest. Those animals occur in smaller numbers than say fish or shrimp. They don't reproduce in large numbers. They take a long time to reach sexual maturity...

    Heating Ideas appreciated!

If you plan on letting the animals roam on the floor. I would attach several lamps around the room. Clamp type Lamps Would probably be best. Maybe 24" off the ground. But make it so they could be adjusted. Use CHEs and full spectrum lights in alternate lamps. In a small room it will get...

Help!! Sami cant open her eyes

Could you buy a heating pad at the pharmacy till you get appropriate heat elements? Also, partially covering the enclosures top will trap a lot of heat. Just be sure that if you use something flammable, like a towel, that it doesn't touch the heat lamp. do you own a thermometer? That should...

Chloe out in 30 degree weather!

Thanks! I have to say that her growth was good when she was kept indoors. But once outside in the so.cal sun and on mazuri pellets with every other meal she out grew her 15'x10' pen in three years.
