Hello Greg- She (im still guessing a she) is 24 inches long and 19-20 inches wide. I have not weighed her but guessing 85-95lbs. I know she looks fat and hefty in that pic but i beleive its the angle. Here is another pic. Also guessing a she because the plastron is very flat not concaved at all...
I haven't poted in here since 2012- my how time fliys. Here is a pic of Squirt who is now around 8 years old. You can see her here enjoying her own private buffet!
Question- you mention you have seen the temps go down to 60F, is that the coldest it gets there throughout the year? in captivity they seem to be quite cold tolerant and sturdy even when submitted to temps in the 50's. I know of one keeper that stated his would leave the heated shed in 30+...
These pics are outstanding! Very prehistoric and i couldn't imagine how it felt to actually be there and see these wonderful animals. I'm going to go home and hug squirt right after work!!!
Thanks for all the kind words on the shed- it was alot of work. Here is a few better shots of the whole setup with the redfoot neighbors. And of course a close up of that sexy face of his- someone give him some sunblock and lotion for that complexion!
Greg- Squirts dad here- I too visted Abbots farm in coco beach. It was early 80's when I went there. I bought a baby leopard tortoise from he and his wife. Charles Abbot was a nice guy and he had a cool setup thered on his property. When I was there he had a huge Water Monitor lizard in a small...
I need to get a close up of him/her. Went with Squirt because he/she has a deformity in the tail area, there really isnt one at all so thought that name fit a 400lb tortoise! Ill try and get a close up shot soon.
Thanks, No the pine cones dont seem to be an issue with Squirt. Now the right side of the shed is sectioned off for 4 redfoots and one loves the pine cones, getting on top and rocking back and forth to scratch his belly! funny to see. Squirt will scratch against that small palm from time to time...
I haven't posted in a while so thought I would share some updated pics of Squirt and his fancy shmancy Shed! Squirts been doing great and as he is getting older (2006 baby) he is coming out of his shyness and starting to eat from our hands and come to us more often. Enjoy!
Yeah I have read that before but I also read they are highest in calcium content. So i would like opinions on feeding these greens from others who have had good or bad experiences in using these in their tortoise diets. I have been feeding mostly this to my Aldabra for 4 years with no negative...
You mention protein a couple times. i too have an aldabra and other than a little mazuri maybe once or twice a week I feed mainly collards, Kayle and sometimes mustard greens. He also has all the southern bermuda grass he can handle. I dont give straight protein in the form of meat or anything...
Thanks- both sides have the ramps and hatches- one for the aldabra and the other side for the 4 redfoots. Of course inside there is a divider with the aldabra having the kingsize bed of course, haha. Alot has changed since that pic, a few small palms and more fencing. Now to make nest sites....
thanks everyone- really not a great pic- took it quicky with my phone walking by the pen. Squirt was born in 2006 and I recieved him/her early 2009. In 09 he was not much bigger than a softball and now pushing 50lbs or so.
Thanks everyone! Those are some good suggestions. I definately will make sure to have a few places. I know what will happen the first rain though, they all will convert one to a Redfoot Mud Spa and all pile in but that is ok too. i will definately dig near some sort of backing. I like the idea...
