We should consider a UVB meter as mandatory

There is a great facebook page called "reptile lighting" that covers a lot of this with links to best lights and UVB for the various types of reptiles. That said, I often wonder if we are going about this backwards. Like saying we know water is good for you, but then provide a fire house to...

    Help!! Female or Male?

I thought so too, based just on the shape (U vs V), but the tail is so short and there is no concave shell underneath - so kinda confused. At 6 years old, I figured those things would be more obvious?

Looking to re-home red foot tortoise about 1-2 years old

If still available, we'd love to have her. We just started our search for a redfoot tortoise and would be able to provide a good home. We are located just north of Seattle.

Just checking in to say 'hi'

Hi folks. It has been a while since I have posted on here. Just got busy with life mainly. Thought I’d stop by and see how things are going and give everyone an update (any who may even be slightly interested – rumor has it, there are a couple of you…) Family: Still going strong...

    serious life question!!!!!!!!!!!

When you live your life in a way that puts others first, you hardly have the time or need to question yourself. A self centered life is a life never satisfied, never content. always something new, something bigger, something more exciting, something younger, a bigger party, something else on...

the secret policemans other ball (warning graphic picture)

Clearly then the answer is an obvious "no". Yet you claimed this: Yep, very rediculous... :) (oh, and most folks have no issue warming up the dead rat and wiggling it around a bit if needed to get the snake interested - it isn't that hard.)

the secret policemans other ball (warning graphic picture)

News flash... when you have a snake in CAPTIVITY it is no longer IN THE WILD.... Just some food for tought ;) PS - have you actually witnessed a snake in the wild actually choose to starve to death rather than eat a previously killed prey item? I wonder what motivates some snakes to eat...

What's the best spot for tortoise keeping in America?

NOT arizona or southern cali. Too dry. Especially for hatchlings. And more indoor areas will be running A/C, so even more dry. I would coose south east texas to florida. Something with warm and humid weather year round. The other nice thing with that type of climate is that that grass and...

the secret policemans other ball (warning graphic picture)

Right Katie. The 'what they do in nature' bit just doesn't hold water. Most reputable and experienced snake owners feed pre-killed rodents. Now if you are OK with being all natural, and letting snake mites take over, predators have access to it, letting a rat chew off your snakes eye, etc...

the secret policemans other ball (warning graphic picture)

Hang on a second. I think at least one of the dissenters here posted pics of their box turtles eating LIVE bugs and worms... No warning!!! How is that any less hypocritical than someone posting a pic of a snake eating a frozen\thawed rat that was killed in a humane way? At that point, it is...

    Back to court... 3rd time's a charm...

Understandable. My wife and I both had rough childhoods. Especially my wife. We chose to learn from the lessons instead of allowing them to hold us hostage and maybe even repeat the same mistakes. And we both try not to live and make choices based on fear and 'what ifs'... It isn't easy...
