Turtle or tortoise? What is this?

Awesome! Is the turtle safe in a garden? There is no pond and it was 97 degrees outside today.

My friend found this in her yard. What is it?

Give your torts as much space as possible!

That's clever! Sheldon would SO try to climb out of the bridge though. He loves heights and he never gives up once he decides to climb.

Give your torts as much space as possible!

Yep, two of 'em glued together. I'm so bad at building things that I actually panicked the full 24 hours that wood glue was setting. I was shocked and relieved when it held together perfectly.

Give your torts as much space as possible!

I could probably manage doing that on one of the covers. He actually likes to sleep in the dark room on the right, though. He's always enjoyed dark places, maybe he's a bit moody!

Give your torts as much space as possible!

I guess it seems obvious, but until now I had my tortoise in 6 sq feet because that's all I had room for. He spent most of the day sleeping. Now, I'm no carpenter (in fact I can't even hammer a nail straight), so I bought a couple of those pre-made houses and doubled the space my Sheldon has to...

    [free] once-opened bag of mazuri

That's fantastic news! So I just have to find the non-LS! Oh thank heavens. Sheldon loves mazuri to bits!

    [free] once-opened bag of mazuri

Mazuri changed the formula to smaller pellets. Sheldon won't eat them any more! It used to be his favorite food. I will mail this bag to anyone that wants it. Otherwise it's going in the trash.

At what age do Russians stop growing?

I got my Russian tortoise back in 2011 and I measured his shell, and it was 4 inches long. When I got him, he was very sick. He had worms, and the vet I took him to overdosed him with antiprotozoans and nearly killed all his gut microbes. So I had to feed him probiotics for months. After 2...

Sphagnum Moss - safe to use?

Well, I watched him for a couple days and he didn't try to eat it, but he's a strange tortoise because he only eats things I put on his plate. I thought he might be scared to find his room completely filled with this stuff, but this morning I found him there digging it up :)

Sphagnum Moss - safe to use?

I got this by mistake from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019J2MA2/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20 I got refunded and they told me to keep the moss as well! Which is cool, if I can use it. Will my tortoise be safe?

    Consider LEDs!

Right, they're not for plant growth or MVB at all, they're just low-wattage lighting for dark spots in your space that you don't want to have to change often. I wouldn't switch to LED for a main bulb at all, since you'd lose out on that all-important pretend-sunshine.

    Free Play Time?

I let Sheldon wander the bonus room with 3 people watching him, the area freshly vacuumed for an obsessively long amount of time, and all possible exits to dangerous places blocked off. It's a 2nd floor room so the floor is always warm for him. He spends a solid 30 minutes (about 3 times a week)...

    Consider LEDs!

LEDs are the newest technology and they come in the R20 size (the shape of heat lamps) and work with all the typical heat lamp fixtures we use. Difference being, they don't give off heat, so they are ideal for brightening up an enclosure without changing the temperatures! Got a dark spot in a...

Lost 20 grams and very active

Good idea. I still had the bags in the garage. Nothing strange. Regular 'ol coco coir. I think you're right and he needs a minute. It's just so easy to hyperventilate over him. Thank you for being nice and replying. I don't know what I'd do without you all.

Lost 20 grams and very active

I weigh him weekly and he never varies by more than 5 grams. Every morning he is between 355 and 360. This morning he was 340. Considering 319 was his weight when he was worm-infested, I'm not exactly thrilled. The enclosure was cleaned out with a few sprays of vinegar and alcohol, and then...
