    Zippy-8-3-2003.jpg

Zippy is about 2.5 years old. About 9 inches from end of shell to end of shell. I wonder if this winter might be the last year in the house. I should prepare suitable outdoor housing soon.

    Idea's for soaking tray.

Tractor Supply sells a rubber tray in various sizes and 3-4” deep. Search Rabbit cage liner. It’s sturdy and lightweight. Google might show other stores but I bought mine at Tractor Supply.

How long can a sulcata survive without food and water?

Im happy to report that Zippy is back in his enclosure! My precious tort had gone into the bird room. That door is usually closed but he must have followed me in at feeding time. That room is kept at 85F for the parrot and monkey babies. He has been without his humidifier for the past few days...

How long can a sulcata survive without food and water?

I have a 2 year sulcata. After his morning soak I always let him walk around the house. In the evening I return him to his enclosure. He/she is too large to fit under appliances and furniture. I have never had a problem finding him. On Friday I lost him in the house. He has not come out to eat...

The Best Way To Raise A Sulcata, Leopard, Or Star Tortoise

Thank you for posting this. I followed your advice to the letter during my sucata’s first year. It’s happy, healthy and actually has a personality now. How do these guidelines change during the 2nd year as we transition to summers outdoors? More space is common sense. I’m concerned about...

The transition to outdoor living - sulcata

Thank you Tom. As always you have been very helpful.

Can my Sulcata eat this flower?

I believe what you have there is Morning Glory. Perhaps with some research you can determine the type of Morning Glory. Some are safe. I'm not an expert with tortoise diets so wait for more advice on this. What I do know is that the seeds can be toxic. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more help but...

The transition to outdoor living - sulcata

I've read other messages but haven't found what I'm looking for. Pardon me if this is redundant. My sulcata, Zippy, is 14 months old. We live in southern Ohio. I have taken him/her outside every day since hatching providing the temperature is over 70F. Short outings at first and eventually...

How long can 2 Sulcatas share a space?

Tom, thank you for your quick reply. I do have the hatchling in a separate tub. They were only together for the picture. I was not aware of the communicable diseases going around but I will keep Peppy, the new tort, in his own space. The forest soil is a fresh batch and the tub hasn't been used...

How long can 2 Sulcatas share a space?

I have received a new Sulcata hatchling. Zippy, my first one, is a year old now. I have the smaller tub that I started Zippy in. Should I keep the hatchling in his/her own tub or can the two of them live together in a larger tub for the next year? Side note, Zippy now spends warm days outdoors...

    My runaway sulcata

Thanks for the tips. I will get a visual barrier put up before I bring him outside again.

    My runaway sulcata

Yes it’s a huge relief. I bet he was so scared and I was so worried about him being safe.

    My runaway sulcata

I had left my 1 year old sulcata in a chain link pen, with flight netting over the top, alone for about 1 hour. I take my buddy out on any day that is over 70 degrees. He is often left alone. Yesterday, for reasons I don't understand, my buddy was not in the pen when I returned. I walked 7-8...

    Zippy - 1 year old

Happy Hatching Day, Zippy. Over the past year you have grown to 12.7 ounces and reached a length of 5 inches. It has been a pleasure to watch you grow. You have given me much joy over the past year. May this be the first of many birthdays. Now let's go outside and play!

    My 1.3 creep of Russians

Thank you for sharing these. I had been wondering if different torts had different personalities. Well, you answered that question. They are beautiful, BTW.

    Tortoise on lap

My baby sulcata prefers to sit on me. I sit near him/her when we are in the yard. He will explore for a minute or two and then races over to crawl up my legs and get to my lap. To be honest, he might be doing this for the shade provided by my big belly. LOL

How often should I change my substrate?

I was about to ask the same question when I found this post. I spot clean daily and the wash the food tray when I see that it needs it. However, I know that he urinates in his pen. Question - Does the urine have anything in it that may attract bacteria or harmful insects? I'm asking because...

    Eight Rescued Tortoises!

What a good friend that was to give you these beautiful tortoises. I bet it is a beautiful sight to see them respond to you. Enjoy and take good care of them. I hope you find a way to get your aldabra someday soon.
