    That’s a really good point whenever I used soil in the past for different enclosures i always used a sterile pet shop brand I never used compost from a gardening centre for that very reason you don’t have a clue what it contains .

    I wouldn’t like to add water with a watering can as it could make the enclosure too damp . From what I’ve read Russian tortoises are a desert species and don’t require high levels humidity .

    I’m definitely going to stick with orchard bark now that you have recommended it . I wouldn’t like to risk using anything else. Thanks for the care sheet that really simplifies things .

    That’s interesting I’ll definitely do more research and look into that . I was going to use soil originally but it’s very hard to get sterile loam in Ireland so I might just stick with the orchard bark .

    Thanks for that advice I definitely will upgrade his enclosure . the current enclosure was recommended to me when I purchased him so I definitely will be changing that .

    He had the eye issue before I installed the new mvb bulb and the substrate was originally a mix of sand and soil by habitat. I only changed it to reptile turf recently to see if that was the issue.

    I have a Arcadia MVB bulb 150w at a high of 45cm and reptile turf as the substrate The basking spot is around 37c

    Hi my name is Daniel I have a 4 year old Russian tortoise and his eyes have been swollen for about 2 months now. I have tried everything from bathing him to eye drops just wondering what could be the cause of the problem. Here’s some pictures
