    Russian hatchling weight

All sounds about right to me and the weight gain is normal. In the first few months they don't gain quickly, but after the 6 month to a year old they will gain weight a lot quicker! No worries as long as you see your tortoise eating everyday.

    Hibernating Russian tortoise naturally

I live in the Netherlands where winter temperatures are between 18 to 35 degrees. Does that mean it's safe to let my russian hibernate naturally in the basement of the house where she can dig herself under the ground in the soil?

    Hibernating Russian tortoise naturally

Hello all, Could somebody please explain this: For hibernating tortoises like Horsfieldii almost everybody says you need to maintain a consistent temperate between 38 - 42 for hibernating them and there are those 2 different methods of box hibernation or fridge hibernation. I don't understand...

New red foot tortoise seems nervous+not eating?

I would not worry much if the humidity on the hot side is 50-60% as long as the cooler side is 70-80%. Anyways the majority of the hours for your tortoise is without the hot day hours. When evening time you probably will lower the temperature to 72-75, this way most of the hours the enclosure...

New red foot tortoise seems nervous+not eating?

The enclosure is too small and defiantly within 2-3 years you need to replace it. Also about half of the terrarium is occupied by the water bowl. I would replace that one by a smaller water bowl, so that your tortoise have some space to walk an wonder around. Also the substrate looks a little...

New red foot tortoise seems nervous+not eating?

I have had experience with many types of substrate, I have seen that the coco fiber is somewhat rough for the hatchlings and could also hurt their eyes. For hatchlings I use coco humus as it's soft and it keeps humidity, when the tortoise is about one year old cypress mulch or coco fiber is...

    Young redfoot tortoise behaviour. help

You tortoise might be spoiled by liking to eat just fruits. I know my red foot tortoises run for fruit, but I provide fruits occasionally (once per 1-2 weeks). You should get him used to eating good greens and vegetables. Once this done he'll eat everything just fine. How often do you feed fruits?

New red foot tortoise seems nervous+not eating?

Adding pictures of the enclosure would be good to be able to help you. Also what temperature is the hot side and the cool side? Its good to know the red foot tortoises do not really need a basking area under a hot spot. It's best to have an over all temp of 82-85. Even though most of the...

Is this shell normal or does it need treatment?

True what you have guessed and that is also what I have explained to @Yvonne G. The pyramiding in her shell is not so bad yes it a common acceptable limits, there is a lot worse. Wil she be ok not doing anything about her shell?

Is this shell normal or does it need treatment?

I just rescued this RF from an old man who was not giving her a proper care. In winter he stored his tortoises of different species together in a storage box with a CH. In summer he puts them out in an old ditry green house to eat just one type of plants. She is about 30-40 years old and its...

Is there a max age for female red foot for nesting?

Hi all, Everywhere I read about the maturity of red foot and the age when they start laying eggs, but is there a max age for the females for laying eggs? I have got a breeding group 1:3 of big heavy red foot tortoises that are estimated to be 35 years old and I want to be prepared. Cheers, Carlos
