My old guy goes back and forth along one side of his area too. I think it is their desire to want to explore more ;)

    hibernating

Glad to see this thread. I am in socal too (Costa Mesa), and am so nervous about the hibernation thing. I have a 70 yr old DT. The rescue coordinator said she stops feeding (besides grazing grasses) in November and waits until the end of November when the night temps get down low enough to put...

    Desert Tortoise on Heroes!

I don't know if any of you watch Heroes, but there is a Desert Tortoise they keep showing in the desert scenes with Matt Parkman. So cool

Robyn, What if I have an outdoor house in his pen that stays dry, with bermuda for bedding? Can he stay in that for the winter?

    I'm adopting a new girl!!

Congrats on your new girl :) We love our DT! I am in the Costa Mesa area and we just brought home a 70 year old DT. He has a large area in our backyard and sleeps in his "house", in his pen, every night. This is our first tortoise, so I don't know how we will do the hibernation. That I need...

    My DT and Two RES

This is our small rescue RES. We are keeping him/her. He is so afraid when he sees me, and then has this surprised look when I don't hurt him and he gets food. Poor guy :( Watching me ;) This is the big girl. My friend is taking her because they have a larger pond. Thanks for...

    My DT and Two RES

I took some pictures of the "old man" and the Red Eared Sliders today. The turtles were a surprise when the Tortoise Rescue heard I had a pond! I had done all this research on tortoises, so I have had some learning to do on the turtles ;) I was happy to help though. Both were saved from dogs...

The RES Rescue laid an egg!

I really don't know much about her past. She was rescued far from water, with dogs attacking her :( She looks to be in good shape, just some light colored spots on her shell. The rescuer whom I got our DT from doesn't normally do turtle rescue so when she heard I had a pond, she asked me to take...

The RES Rescue laid an egg!

The larger (and obviously female) rescue we have in our pond has laid an egg! The rescuer did tell me that she probably needed to lay them. But I know nothing about turtle eggs! Do turtles lay un-fertilized eggs on a regular basis? Do I need to do anything to help? This egg I found was cracked...

    he bit me!

When we went down to the resce for our new DT, I was looking at all of the fosters in their pens, listening to the rescue lady tell us about each of them. The next thing I knew, the "old man" saw my bright pink toenail polish and took a bite! I felt like HE picked me :P

    The Rest of the Family

That was my first show LOL! And that's me :) No handler. I personally think it's more fun to show with your dog rather than watch someone else do it... we have fun ;)

    Our RES Rescues

When I was down picking up our Old Man (DT), the rescue lady had just received two RES. She remembered that we have a pond, and asked if we would take them and I can't say no :P They are doing very well in the pond. They bask on the pump line, so I am going to get a floating basking area...

    Introducing our Old Man :)

He is a Desert Tortoise... but he doesn't have a name yet. We adopted him from the San Diego turtle rescue and they said he is approx. 70 years old. He is the sweetest thing, and so full of personality :D He is eating and doing great... he settled in so quickly! When he first came...

New Here and New to the Tortoise

Thanks Yvonne. I am only planning to keep one species for now, so it's either the Russian or the Desert :) We are going to rescue one or two. They have lots of orphans needing homes! I am so excited for our new "kids" :)
