My mum couldn't be convinced to allow me to get a tortoise, but last month she caved and allowed me to have a crested gecko :P
Here's the little guy now. He's been really active tonight!
He snapped at me this morning when my hand got too close, but he seemed comfortable after I backed off a bit.
My mum refuses to let us get another bird. So I hope he will let me take him out of his cage, someday.
He climbed the wall of the cage halfway from the first to the second perch, where my hand was, when I tried again just now.
Joey used to have a friend, but she passed away a couple of years ago :c
Perhaps we could get another though.
We got Joey when he was already a year or two old. He wasn't tamed, and he wouldn't let us hold him, and we never really worked at changing that. But now I feel pretty terrible that the poor guy is stuck in his cage 24/7. It's difficult, but not impossible, I've heard, to tame an older budgie...
Hello!
I see you're from Ottawa (I'm pretty observant like that), I'm from near Toronto. My sister goes to school in Ottawa, though c:
Nice to meet you!
I'd think they should still be available at reptile expos, shouldn't they?
I haven't been to one- I should ask my friend who has been- but I would think they'd sell tortoises.
They sell lizards and other reptiles, after all, which also carry salmonella. (Though mind you, tonnes of things do...
A problem that I have heard with heating pads is that they can get too hot and burn your pet.
If you're keeping him outside and it does get that cold, perhaps a heat lamp would be better for you?
This knowledge is all from taking care of lizards, however. I don't know about tortoises.
I have no problem /with/ bugs, but I feel bad for them, so I prefer herbivorous pets xD
I may have to wait a few years though, it seems. I don't think I'll be able to convince my mother. We 'have too many pets', and she 'feels bad for things that are kept in enclosures'.
Gah. We have a bird who...
I just have a few concerns regarding box turtles.
I've seen them referred to as both 'turtles' and 'tortoises', though they're actually a genus of the former. Do they require a lot of water in their enclosure?
Second, I've read that they're easily stressed from being handled. Not that I will be...
Do they grow quickly?
I'll have my own place in a few years, and I can build the enclosure as large as I would like then. But for now, space is a little restricted.
If they will need a large enclosure very quickly, I think I may have to wait to get one.
I love just forty five minutes from the...
Hello, Anthony! Thank you c:
Redfoots are cute, and very affordable. Are they generally cheaper as babies?
How big of an enclosure is recommended? I've done a bit of research, but haven't found many specifics.
First of all, I live in Canada- near Toronto. So I would need a tortoise that would be able to spend around 1/3 - 1/2 of the year inside, as well as nights, aside from during the summertime (depending on what kind of year it is).
I really like the larger tortoises- but I need one that isn't so...
