    Outdoor setups - cold climate

My 2 year old sulcata is still at a size that he's doing just fine in the house at the moment. So this is future planning. For those of you that keep sulcatas in a colder climate, can I see your outdoor enclosures? I'm thinking a well-insulated and reinforced shed/small barn situation with a...

    Calcium dust?

Cool, I'll give it a try

    Calcium dust?

How often are you dusting food, if you're dusting it? I have a calcium/D3 powder and I've been trying to occasionally dust my one month old sulcata's greens but anytime I do, he refuses to eat them. I don't blame him, those calcium dusts smell terrible. But I'm not totally sure if I should even...

    Normal weight gain?

The plastron looks good, nice and smooth. I'll be honest, a friend of mine gave him to us. I'm not totally sure who the original breeder was. I should probably get that info so I can find out the hatch date and what kind of conditions he was started in, etc.

    Normal weight gain?

I got my hatchling sulcata 10 days ago. I weighed him (I'm saying him, but obviously there's no way to tell for sure) when he arrived, he was 35 grams. I weighed him again today, he's up to 40 grams. Is this a normal amount of weight gain for a 10 day span? It seems kind of fast. Maybe he was...

My tortoise made friends with a huge moth

I had an atlas moth emerge sometime early this morning before I was even out of bed. Unfortunately, she's failed to fully expand her wings. Disappointing, but not uncommon. Anyway, my little guy Hank was fascinated. Just a couple of friends, watching the clouds.

Is it just me, or do tortoises seem to have unique little personalities?

Of course they're living breathing animals, so they have feelings just like anything else. But as someone who has/does own a wide variety of reptiles, it just seems like turtles and tortoises seem to carry some of the most obvious personalities of any other reptiles I've owned.

    Eating poop

Yes, he's getting a 15 minute soak daily and the humidity is consistently at around 75%-80%. Thanks! Primarily grasses and weeds (chemical and pesticide free, from my yard), with a small amount of random greens here and there. Water dish is refreshed twice a day and is never empty.

Is this ok? (sleeps a lot)

His shell looks just fine! It's normal for their shells to have some give at this age. It's takes a while for their shells to calcify and harden completely. I wouldn't be overly concerned. As long as he's eating and pooping normally, all is well. As for the sleeping, don't be too concerned about...

    Eating poop

I've heard that it's normal for tortoises to eat their poop. Should I be at all concerned if my sulcata is eating it EVERY time? He's about 2 weeks old.

Should I just let my sulcata graze?

He's only a couple months old, so he's tiny (also I'm just saying "he" because as far as I've been told it's still too early to tell gender). He doesn't just run loose outside. He's in an enclosure indoors for most of the day and night. I've just been letting him roam for an hour or so outside...

Should I just let my sulcata graze?

So here's the deal. I've read source after source that states that the best thing to do is to just let your sulcata tortoise graze on the grasses in your yard, provided that they are pesticide and chemical free (which mine is). But my yard is fairly heavy in clover, and according to the...
