Bob is a 4 year old Sulcata, occasionally he discharges an off white pasty mass when he soaks. Not sure what it is or what may be causing it. Other wise he seems good.
Any Ideas?
The photo here is where I have 12 pound Bob now. 3x8 foot set up with radiant heat.
He’ll stay here for the Chicago winter then out side for summer. What temp and humidity level should I keep it at. Should the hide end of the unit be warmer or cooler than the open side? I have the floor at 88...
enough to get out of the sun if outside in a large area. My 4500 gram Sulcata wanders endlessly but never heads for cover/shade. Is there a concern about over heat in summer sun? He has much cover to go to with water . Should I mist an area he roams?
He also eats ANY turd he finds, bird, deer...
Below are pics of my torts enclosure. Its gotten warm in the Chicagoland are and would like input on his care when outside.
All input greatly appreciated.
Have had Bob over 2 years. He's gone from 47 grams to 2950 in that time. The issue is moisture level in his enclosure. At 80% it becomes unclean and buggy in a short time. Needs cleaning several times a month. Ive attempted a different course
of soaking him everyday for the last several
months...
My sulcata enclosure is producing very small flying nats(?) I am cleaning it once a month but they are here and getting through the house.
Any ideas what to do?
Whats the proper UV level in their enclosure, measured at top of shell.
I have a 65 watt bulb for basking and a Zilla T8 fluorescent fixture.
Both lights on same timer. Solarmeter registers 3.5 when on.
Basking temp 95. Humidity 80-90’% day and nite.
Bobs shell just back of his head has a fold. Not not sure what’s going on.
He's fed lawn grass/wheat grass/dandelion greens, kale, clover.
Zoomed desert feed occasionally. humidity 70-90%. 330 grams now.
Temp 80-100 depending on time f day/night. Appreciate all input.
Bob is a 15 month old who is doing well. I want to bring him out in the sun occasionally . Ive built a enclosure about 6ft across, dried grass and much clover, water dish, shaded areas and I put a log cave with water dripping on it. the temp during day runs 75-90+ depending on cloud cover...
Started taking our 1 year old Tort out in the yard on warm days. He‘s very active, eats well but has an affinity for sun dried poop. He find stuff we cant see, by digging down in the grass.
He will graze on grass and clover but goes wild on poop. Is this a problem? We let him roam while were...
Need to know what the UV light reading should be on a Sulcata. Using a Desert 50
UVB T8 bulb.
How often should one add calcium powder to the greens fed the tort. mixture of wheat grass, kale, dandelion, clover sprouts, endive and ground Zoomed desert tort pellets.
Bobs going on 10 months. 40 to 136 grams in that time. So far so good. Not sure if what were doing is good long term. He’s fed wheat grass, kale, clover and alfalfa sprouts, dandelion leaves and ZooMed desert Tort food pulverized. Gets a soak everyday, which he seems to enjoy. His basking temp...
most of the time the torts pop in the soak it looks like brown or green toothpaste. Once and a while a little pool on the basking stone and occasional in the water it looks like blowing out a lot of chalk.
Input please, normal?
I’m using the Florescent unit now, it’s 10 inches above there basking area.
How do you know if they are getting the correct lighting? Who here uses either bulb and why and at what height?
This is my setup. Incandescent heat flood bulbs. Fluorescent UV fixture. both on timer.
When nite comes, bulbs switch off and thermostat the keeps enclosure at 80 degrees overnight with pad underneath.
What is ideal basking temp? Do I have enough area flooded with UV? Tort spends
hours under...
I have day time temps controlled. Basking, incandescent spot lights, fluorescent UV unit
The critters spend a lot of the day where it’s
warm. It’s 96 under the lights and +-80 as you move away.
What should nite time temp be maintained at? Now it gets down close to 70. I lived in Arizona and...
set up my tort enclosure with a zoomed 100 watt powersun bulb and a red nite heat bulb. The powersun lasted 10 days. Seems to be hit or miss with these mercury vapor bulbs. What is the healthiest setup to use for desert tortoises that’s
dependable.
