Thanks, @Tom . That is what we are doing now. I have him in a 50-gallon tub in my bathroom with UV and basking light and he seems very content. Guess I will just plan on doing that each year and construct the "almost year round" perfect habitat for the rest of the year.
I live in Phoenix and have gone through as many of the posts I can find related to Russians and housing them outdoors 24 x 7 all year round. I have a male Russian that is full grown. Right now he is hanging out in a 50 gallon tub inside. He spent all summer outside in his pen with no trouble...
Hi...I live in Phoenix and there is a great group here (see this link: https://www.phoenixherp.com/assistance/surrender-a-pet.html) that works very hard to accept, care for, and adopt out reptiles. Would definitely be worth checking out.
Ok...thought I would share that our Taj Mahal fit for a tortoise queen Arizona winter box is completed! Thank you to all who provided advice...time to stop sharing the bathroom with MissT who is very grateful to be back outside and no worse for the wear thank goodness. Sharing some pics of the...
Question on the night box doorway...looking for the material to make the heat barrier in the doorway for when the door is open but the tortoise can still walk through it...can someone post a good link or what it is called? I don't know what to search for. Thanks!
Just a quick update and huge sigh of relief...Miss T is eating and pooping normally now...she has had 3 meals and 2 lengthy warm soaks since I put her in the bathroom. She is her feisty self and behaving normally...well, as normally as she can at the moment. At any rate, I feel lucky to have...
I gave her a warm water 30 minute soak and she warmed right up and wandered around and had a big meal. Her poop is runny but I am guessing that is because she has been stressed and not in the right conditions for about a week. Hoping that will improve in the next few days?
Operation tortoise rescue is underway...I dug her out of her hide and brought her into a warm, toasty bathroom. It's not quite 80 but getting close with the space heater running full blast. I showed my husband the plans for the winter box and as soon as it stops pouring here (we got 1 inch in...
Ok...dumb question...when you use the Kane heat mat on the floor...where does it go? I mean...won't the tortoise pee on it and ruin it? Does it go beneath the wood floor then? I looked at the explained view for @Tom designs...want to be sure the floor is not insulated correct?
It's not that I don't want to make a box at all...it's that making a box takes time and materials. I will be working to get her a box made this weekend but I hear you saying that I need to get her into a heated environment right away. I don't have one. I have my house and I have my garage. If...
Ok...thanks for helping me address the situation...I know what I need to do...will find the time and resources to do it. I may have to dig in and get her out once the box is ready unless we have a warm day in the next couple of weeks. If @Tom has those photos available of his box would be much...
Hi here are some pics of her hide...thank you for your advice. I am researching how to build boxes but it will take me a few weeks or more to get one done if I can do it this year. More like around Christmas time. I looked for pictures on this site but lots of the ones posted by Tom in his posts...
Hi all...I have a 3 year old Sulcata that I got in May. I did not plan well for this winter and now she is in her hide and our temps are cool and I fear she may not come out for several weeks or more. I am just realizing through reading on this site the importance of a heated box for sulcatas in...
yes...that is the part we have not quite figured out yet. Right now I have a shallow dish in the enclosure for during the day and I do nightly soaks (30 min) in another set of containers. I have adopted a "two soak container" method for when I just can't stand seeing her floating in her poo and...
