Hi there! I see you are from Scotland and have a Russian tortoise. Me too. Just to say that I order my basking "flood " bulbs from Ebay. 60 W incandescent filament bulbs. The link is below.
I joined this forum 5 years ago and it is an absolute godsend for the best and only correct care and...
I was reading through this thread and thought I'd put my thoughts in even though I'm a little nervous but I want to be honest and say what I feel.
I joined this group 5 years ago and I have to admit that I found it very intimidating. I have stuck with it because I care about my tortoise and...
Boris our Horsfield really enjoying his outdoor enclosure. He's been outside every day for two weeks and it's wonderful to see him enjoying his outdoor enclosure 😌
Thank you. He's still getting used to it and seems cautious but moving about ok, but he's getting outside most days due to the lovely spell of weather. I'm also going to brumate him for the first time this year.
I posted a thread in May about my Russian tortoise Boris being very energetic in his enclosure and took the fabulous advice of @Tom and @Cathie G and @wellington to make him a new improved much larger indoor enclosure.
Here is Boris in his new 8x4 ft enclosure in our large shed. I'm still...
Hello and thank you for your reply. That's so good to know! The weather has warmed up enough here that he's been out the last few days for most of the day and like your wee one, he is desperate to get out as soon as he wakes.
That's lovely your 16 year anniversary is coming up! And lovely to...
Great info and reassurance, thank you very much. Time to get planning and building! I'll be prepared to brumate him this autumn. I am very nervous about getting it right.
I would love to give him a much larger indoor enclosure but he's currently in our bedroom and no room elsewhere. We are looking into a special purpose built shed in the garden. That's a plan in progress.
He's outside today! 😊 He is certainly crazy right now. Hasn't stopped all day. I bathe him...
My Tortoise has gone from months of sleeping and being very inactive to suddenly stomping, charging and trying to climb out. He's not interested in his food and just charges at it and drags it all over his enclosure.
He's 5 years old, I've changed nothing in his enclosure. It's a 5x2 indoor...

The enclosure is not glass sided. It's a 6ft by 3.5 ft wooden enclosure with high sides. He cannot see out. He has hides to break up the field of view, a humid enclosed hide at the dark cooler end and a stone ramp with other slate and different textures surfaces to walk over. He likes obstacles...
He's gorgeous 🥰 I have a 4 year old male Russian tortoise. They are the funniest little cheeky fellows. Their little shiny brown eyes seem to look so wise. You sound like you really know your stuff. ☺️
I noticed from older posts similar to mines that you had advised that the cuts can be caused by the tortoise climbing and trying to climb up the enclosure sides, slipping without time to pull it's head in causing the cuts. This is exactly it! Thank you for solving the mystery. Poor Boris has...
Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your expertise. I usually bathe him every few days for approx 30 mins in a large tub with the water depth like you said. He always has fresh water available that I change every morning when I give him his greens. I usually rinse his weeds from the garden...
