    Weed Identification ...

Ragwort, which is toxic to many animals, I confirmed that it is toxic to tortoises. DO NOT feed. (the leaves can vary a bit in thickness of lobes so it can look very different from one yard to the next and one country to the next but it does appear to be a common UK weed)

    Weed Identification ...

I just rely on the Tortoise table website for identification and use the rule of thumb that "if I don't know, I don't feed it." That Said...it looks very much like it is related to geranium/citronella and I am working to ID it now. Hoping someone on here is more familiar with UK weeds.

    Need advice RI outbreak.

Good luck. This is a very difficult situation and you are truly doing a great job of trying to solve the problem. Your quarantine practice did still provide you with a time delay between the turtle tanks which has allowed you to catch the others...which, had you not quarantined, you would have...

    Great New find!

The multiple vertebral scutes is a malformation and I have seen it in the wild but is most often seen in the pet trade. Here is a link to a page with a photo of a baby that has a similar scute pattern. http://staff.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/2015/02/19/troubles-with-turtles/ Despite it being a...

    Need advice RI outbreak.

Some RI are caused by an airborne virus and can turn into a bacterial infection in the lungs (think common cold and bronchitis) I have no idea if that is the case here but I would certainly ask the Vet about it. I had turtles for many years and they did catch colds and sneeze mucus when it...

    Water Or Not?

I can survive with no food for days and a day or so without water but I would not want to. Since my little guy can't speak I let him decide by making sure water is available for him (he's an adult) Animals are very good at deciding what they want and knowing what they need. Being as "close to...

    How to move large sulcata

I'd try a sled...I know you are in N Carolina but Amazon would deliver. It would be safer than tipping him in and out of something and you would just scoot it under him. Good Luck!

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

I have never seen Hoka drag his tail so I would like to hear if others do this. and Yes, The tail is for mating. Helps reach around their rather awkward shells.

What DOES your tortoise do all day?!

We joke that Hoka is either on or off...no in-between. One part of that is their diet. If you add up the calories in the two handfuls of greens he eats a day it is about 100 calories (maybe less). So, considering he patrols the perimeter, and does some rock climbing between each nap, that is...

Yep, plotting, lots of plotting going on.

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

This is so funny and brilliant ! I laughed out loud (at work) when I saw this. Safety is paramount for sure! I still have to worry about the cats and dogs in our neighborhood but I love this idea for when I am gardening and I let him hang out with me.

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

OMGosh! Very clever indeed. I read several articles that talked about torts not being very smart...but I also see some recent research to indicate that they are smarter than we thought AND maybe smarter in different ways than we thought. Certainly seems like these little Russians would blow...

    Fun food and boredom solutions

Great ideas! We recently gave him a small chunk of thick asparagus and he had to really work at it. Squash would be nice since it is a treat...but he would have to really work at it. I was wondering about foods for his beak too so this is a great suggestion.

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

That must be cute to watch. Tonka trucks...wonder if he thinks it is a big tortoise trying to get in on his space! lol.

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

Our indoor enclosure has solid walls on two sides and he patrols those sides just as much as our clear sides so I haven't really understood about the solid wall thing. I know a lot of people swear that it helps but Hoka seems to think even a solid wall is worth trying to dig through and will...

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

I had been wondering about using a Tile and could not come up with how to attach it in a way that would not harm him or be forever permanent. I was also wondering if I was crazy for even thinking about tiling a tortoise but I saw an article by the company that said they have several tortoises...

    Crazy things my Tortoise does...

The perimeter testing really is so interesting. I keep thinking he will give up but he might actually be waiting for that one time when it works. We just built his outdoor enclosure and he spent the entire day poking his head through the grates and trying so hard to push his shell through too...
