    Hygiene re Worming Treatment

Hi, my little horse field has recently been given the all clear following treatment for pinworm, whilst treating I took all of his wooden hides, logs etc out of his table and have left them in the garden over winter. Will leaving them out in the cold and having washed them with F10 have killed...

    Pellets and Frequency of Feeding?

Hi, I’ve had my Russian since last November and it’s been very trial and error trying to improve his diet. He’s currently on a diet of varied weeds which he begrudgingly will eat. He still won’t touch plantain for love nor money though ha! And I supplement him with some cucumber, florrett...

    Handling

Thanks everyone :) He does hand feed, although it did take awhile to get him to do that. I think I was just too cautious not to over handle him as I think that’s what happened in his last home, he was often taken to nursery and passed around the kids, so no wonder he’s nervous.

    Handling

Hi, I’m looking for some advice; I got my tortoise in November last year when he was about 3 1/2 years old. He was very nervous when I got him and he’s slowly become a lot less so as I’ve kept handling limited. However, I’d like him to get to a stage where he would approach me for a head...

    Seaweed Compost

Hi, I’m looking at growing some safe weeds and flowers for my Russian tortoise, would the below compost, with seaweed in, be okay or should I just stick to topsoil? Thanks :)

    Fruit Flies and Gnats

Hi, I’ve noticed a few fruit flies and/or gnats in my tortoise table lately now the weather is warming up and the windows are open even more. I know they won’t harm my tort but I don’t want them in the house. I clean his table twice a day but his food is left in there from 6am to 4pm whilst...

    Is my tortoise okay

Have a good read of the care sheets on here to get started with your new addition, they’re really helpful :) My tortoise had pinworms when I got him, I took him to the vets to test for worms and have a general health check up and for a course of worming treatment. I know that many members on...

    Horsfield help!

Yeah I’d only use newspaper for a short time, or I was advised to use it when my tortoise had worms just so it was easier to keep everything clean.

    Horsfield help!

Hiya, I’d give the care sheets a read on here (if you haven’t already) and see if they’re any help re set up and lighting. Does he eat when he’s in his enclosure at all? I know daily soaks are often recommended for a sick tortoise to ensure they’re hydrated so that would be worth a try. I’ve...

First New Enclosure Build - UV lighting Advice Needed Please

This may be a really stupid question but what sort of fitting/control thing do I need for this? I can’t seem to order a kit online in the UK. Thanks :)

    Toys?

I’m still a newbie to tortoise ownership but got great ideas from members about enriching his enclosure. I give him food that is hard to eat, so like the end of the chicory or leave some food whole or in large pieces. I hang some food around his enclosure or put some in places he has to climb...

    Russian Tortoise Pinworms

Hi I second what Markw84 has said . Mine was also full of a heavy load of pinworms when I got him. It was treated by the vet but they, and members on here, also recommended the following which I think really helped to shift them (he got the all clear only yesterday so it took about 2 months...

    Can tortoises be moody?

There just seem to be a rhyme or reason as to when or why Sebastian’s moody which is why I wondered if it’s not so much moodiness but that something is stressing him out. I’m pleased to here it’s just a tortoise thing and part of their personalities. Haha I bet Berts really glaring at you when...

    Can tortoises be moody?

Thanks, I am doing [emoji4] and he’s on the mend, the worms have cleared up and I’ve got new uv lights and supplements to help address his soft shell. I’m definitely learning tortoises have their own little personalities but I think as he’s my first and only one I’m just never sure on things...

    Can tortoises be moody?

Hi, thanks, I hadn’t really considered that this might just be his personality and some days, like a lot of animals, he might just want to be left on his own haha! Thank you for that :) I think my temps etc are fine (I’ve been following the caresheets on this forum and have received some...

    Can tortoises be moody?

Hi I’ve only had Sebastian nearly 3 months, he’s a nearly 4 year old male horsefield. I’ve noticed that on some days he seems “friendlier” (for wont of a better word) than others. For example, some days he’ll come towards my hand, sniff it and happily potter about with my hand in his table...
