    Arcadia deep heat projector

I currently use these for my three desert Tortoise's closed-ish chamber. I have two of them, connected to a Vivarium Electronics VE300x2 thermostat, to cover the basking area. I like having the heat separate from the light/UV source so I can fine tune everything.

Solarmeter 6.5R worth its weight in gold!

The UV index in and around the Mojave Desert is insane. Yesterday at 9am the UVI in Mojave, Ca, which is on the western edge of the Mojave Desert was already at 7.0. No wonder desert torts are in their burrows most of the time!

Solarmeter 6.5R worth its weight in gold!

I just got my Solarmeter 6.5R and not a moment too soon! I knew my new UV light set up was stronger than my previous one, especially once I added the Arcadia reflectors to my Sun Blaze T5 HO fixtures, but wow! I'm using a Reptisun 10.0 in a 48" fixture. I had to raise it 20" above the basking...

$#!% hits the fan right before vacation!

Ants!! The little SOB's moved into my indoor tortoise enclosure and setup house in the roots of a plant. I discovered them last night and I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow morning. I stayed up until 2am removing all the substrate, plants, and furniture; wiping the inside down and shoving...

    Peel & Stick Tile

Ah man, I wish I read this before I started gluing!

    Peel & Stick Tile

Thanks for the feedback, everybody! I decided to remove the adhesive and rubber from the backs of the tile and glue them onto some thin plywood leftover from building the tortoise enclosure. I have a ton of Flex Seal leftover, so I'll slap a few coats on the wood before I start with the Flex...

    Peel & Stick Tile

Does anyone have experience using the peel & stick tile mosaics in their tortoise enclosures? I was thinking of making a slate basking corner where the floor and a portion of wall are black slate so my girls can cozy up to something really toasty. My concern is the adhesive and foam rubber...

    Big ol' Red-eared Slider

I came across a huge RES at work today. The carapace is at least 12" long. She made a loud splash when she dove in the water!

    ReptileUV vs Arcadia Heat Projector

Has anyone used the ReptileUV Mega Ray Heat Projector? Their website doesn't have any pictures that show the heating element, but overall it looks just like the Arcadia Heat Projector. The main difference I can see is 60 watts versus 50 watts. I've read that ReptileUV has had some quality...

    Enclosure size?

Found it! (This was a game of hide and seek, right?)

    My 1st Enclosure Build

Thanks Yvonne! I appreciate your feedback. I looked at a lot of your posts before and during this build. I'm trying to balance the advice found here with that of people who swear by keeping DT outside from the start. It's a fools errand, but here I am. The (much) smaller enclosure they were in...

    My 1st Enclosure Build

I did take that into consideration. There's a strip of marble glued to the floor, hidden by the substrate.

    My 1st Enclosure Build

Not sure why this reply isn't showing up in the thread. Maybe @PA2019 deleted it, but I'll answer anyway. I chose materials based on several things, but the main requirement was I needed to be able to cut it easily without the use of power tools, beyond a Dremel. I chose the corregated panels...

    My 1st Enclosure Build

A bookcase + PVC frame + corregated roof panels + plexiglass = happy tortoises This is the [mostly] finished result. I have pictures of the different stages of building, but I'll post those another time. The interior deminsions are 56×28×11.5 I sealed the bookcase with FlexSeal (which has a...

What's in that leaf, grocery and garden, published nutrient list.

Have you done cilantro already? I looked through the thread and didn't see it, but I'm also catching up on last night's Saturday Night Live at the same time. Thanks for this thread, it's great!

    I'm devastated...

Not cool, man. Have a little empathy. Also, you're 100% wrong. There are species of cactus that are spineless, and plenty of people eat cactus. Google search nopales.

    Researching Sand

"Advance with the times" doesn't mean abandoning tried and true methods. You're describing a fad. Advancement means building on what works, examining what doesn't and trying to figure out why - and then doing something about. This is exactly what the OP is trying to do - advance our knowledge...

The Zoos I referenced are all accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The vast majority of Zookeepers have a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and many have a masters. Zoos that are accredited by the AZA are required to participate in Species Survival Plans - science based programs...

    Table seal

Awesome! Did you use the spray or liquid? I noticed the spray carries a Ca. Prop 65 warning. My guess is that's for the propellant, and once dry it's as safe as the liquid.
