I looked and I think Egyptian are out of my budget, but I asked to join anyway. I'm sure to learn things that would apply to the tortoise I do get and I'd get to see some adorable pics!
Yes, there are a lot of laws regarding possession of natives. The only time that I know of exotics being involved in regulations, is if it could potentially affect natives. So really it would only come into play for fish and some mammals. A tortoise would never survive our winter wonderland!
@ShirleyTX I'd love to hear how it's been with Sunshine!
I've been researching for quite some time. I didn't consider an Egyptian because of the very sparse mention of them in everything I've read about tortoises. I'm in the northeast, so my future little friend will be entirely inside 8 months...
I haven't seen much info on them, or seen anyplace that sells them, but I did see mention of them and they sounded like they may be adorable for us.
Lol! I meant suitable, but auto correct put adorable. Torts are adorable after all ❤
I'm in NH! I'm still in the research and preparation stage. Planning on a Hermanns. Possibly Greek or Russian.
I've been asking questions as I think of them. The folks I here are super helpful. I will say that they don't all agree sometimes, so I look at everyone's answers and scavenge old...
It's great to hear from someone who is actually doing exactly what I'm asking about! I had read that they actually need to cool down at night some. I don't want to treat my future tortoise in a way it has to tolerate. I want to do it so it gets as good as I can inside a home in the northeast. It...
So, in trying to narrow my search for the perfect tortoise for my family, I've read so much. The trouble is that no one really agrees on anything, which leads me to believe that torts are somewhat adaptable, as long as basic needs are met.
We're certain we want one from the testudo group...
If I lived in the proper climate, I'd help in a heartbeat! We were just having that conversation. If we didn't live in the frigid northeast, we could take in some large tortoises. Best wishes for your little buddies.
I know this thread is old, but I was curios about this too. Hubby and I hope to retire wi thin 20 years. We plan to move about in an rv seasonally. Yvonne' s answer is great news!
@ZEROPILOT and @TechnoCheese
Do groups have to be raised together for that to work?
I just keep seeing that certain species are listed as "community" species.
Having 2-3 was kind of what made getting a little guy more appealing. Perhaps I will look harder at the marginata if I can only have one...
Thanks! I expect to give extra special care to a baby, I just don't want to get stuck doing it forever and on a large scale. Begginer mistakes was one if the first things I've read and I'm sure I'll be reading again and again! I've made enough pet mistakes when I was younger, and the guilt...
