Hi! I saw your post on the 4 month old Egyptians. They are adorable. I am looking for one to house with my Egyptian who is about a year and a half old. I live in Chicago but would love to get one from you. I received mine in the month of January and arrived nice and warm due to the good...

    Please help!! (smelly oyster shell)

UPDATE! I wanted to provide an update on this. I kept him on the other side of his enclosure for the night before I could address the issue the following day. When I checked the situation out in the morning, the oyster shell substrate no longer smelled. It really must have just needed to be...

    Please help!! (smelly oyster shell)

Thanks so much for replying! The smell is hard to describe. I don't think of fish when I smell it. It smells like an old musty litter box that hasn't been cleaned for awhile. That's the best way I can describe it. It's overpowering and doesn't seem normal. What kind do you get?

    Please help!! (smelly oyster shell)

Thank you for replying. I have it mixed with coconut fiber. I'v heard of many experienced keepers using oyster shells for their egyptians. But the smell is so strong it's gross and is worrying me that it's not normal. On the cooler hide side I only have the coconut fiber. Maybe I'll close him...

I just poured it in his enclosure and it has a really strong odor. I'm afraid to put him back in there. Is this normal? Will the smell go...

    Oyster shell substrate

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have an Egyptian tortoise. I have had him for a couple of months now and he is thriving (think it's a "he"). My enclosure is adequate and I've had my reptile vet and an expert at the Arizona Tortoise Compound approve it. But now I'm just trying out different...

    Oyster shell substrate

The oyster shells were so dusty so I rinsed them. Now it's a big goopy mess in the bucket. Should I have just put them in my tortoise house dry and dusty? Or was I suppose to rinse them? Not sure if they'll dry normally or if I need to just go buy more.

    Age and Size

Hello all! New Egyptian tortoise owner here! I have what I believe to be a young male. My guess is that he is around 8 months old but I am not sure. Not that it is extremely important to know, but I'd like a better idea of how old he is. I know that the youngsters need more hydration and...
