Bringing the baby back from the edge

I have not. I think I will email them today, though. Yesterday she opened her eyes while I was soaking her, and I caught her munching on a piece of grass. Today she’s back to how she was, so I’m taking it day by day.

Bringing the baby back from the edge

This is her the day she arrived.... @Tom said she looked emaciated from the get-go. I just feel so bad for her. Update: she's still getting weaker. The 50/50 gerber carrot/water hasn't helped. She'll orient herself a little bit to where she wants to be temp wise, but very slowly, and then just...

Bringing the baby back from the edge

I should add, I only got the baby two weeks ago. I never saw her eat well the whole time and she was never very active. I’ve offered grass, spring mix, and Mazuri. Temps range from 82-105 with humidity at 80%

Bringing the baby back from the edge

Hey guys, I have a baby tort I’ve had about two weeks now. Enclosure is set up perfectly for a baby sulcata, but she’s going down hill anyway. she hasn’t eaten for at least 4 days now and is getting weaker by the day. And she hasn’t opened her eyes in 5. what can I do? If she doesn’t eat...

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

Ok. I'll mix in some lettuce, and order some Mazuri asap. Thank you so much, Tom, for all your help and insight!!

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

That's honestly what I was most afraid of.... So I'm pretty much in a "wait and see" pattern? Not too much I can do? Just keep on doing what I'm doing and hope?

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

Also, just for general knowledge, and sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you tell if a tort looks emaciated?

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

Oh, and as far as eating so far, I've only seen her munching on a few of the planted romaine plants. I wasn't worried she wasn't eating at first, assuming it was just stress from shipping. She arrived 6 days ago (the 7th)

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

@Tom This is the entire enclosure. (the entrance to the humid hide is in the upper left corner) Its not been warm enough here yet, high last week was 65, and the next few weeks are around 60 and rainy :/ I'm soaking daily for ~20min, keeping the water very warm, and was considering a second...

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

I had another post just a few days ago with pictures of my enclosure, everyone (even tom!) said it looked good. Temps and lights are listed above. I've read every started post ten times at this point :) I'm just concerned at the lack of activity in this little guy considering temps are good.

    Eye problem/“failure to thrive”?

Hi all! Baby Aziza (we have a name!) has been here about a week, but I’m not seeing her as active as I would have expected. She also seems to be having trouble with her eyes, keeping them closed often, even when soaking, and being very slow to open them when I “wake her up” I have zero CFLs in...

    Baby comes tomorrow!

I just used painters plastic. It’s not specifically non toxic, but the tort doesn’t have direct contact with it so I’m not worried about it. The amount of any toxic material transfer would be minimal.

    Baby comes tomorrow!

Oh ok!! Thank you! That makes a lot of sense, I will do that (and check the care sheet for the ideal basking temp again)

    Sulcarta tortoise

the soaking is great, but he needs constant higher humidity. It has to do with the keratin at the growth lines staying moist enough. 25 is still too cold. 27 would be the MINIMUM. And that is ambient temp, not just floor temp. He stays under his basking light all the time because everywhere...

    Sulcarta tortoise

Hi Darren. I'm pretty new to all of this too, but I think part of the reason you got some of the responses that you did is because allowing a tort to free roam is a HUGE no-no. They don't stay warm enough, they don't get the humidity they need, etc. How his shell spikes up like that? That's not...

    Baby comes tomorrow!

I'm waiting on my hygrometer to arrive, but according to my little laser thermometer its about 110 degrees directly under the basking bulb, and 80 on the far side. The flat bulb on top is my UVA/UVB The big dome is my 150W basking bulb (I know Tom mentioned downgrading it, but when I did that...

    Baby comes tomorrow!

Hey guys! Update! The baby arrived this morning, and here s/he is in her updated enclosure!! I’m open to any other improvements!! (I couldn’t find orchid bark so I went with cypress mulch, pet store sourced so it’s safe) also, does it look like she’s starting to pyramid already?

    Baby comes tomorrow!

thank you so much!! Would using orchid bark (or cypress mulch, not sure I can find orchid bark by tomorrow) over the top of these substrates work? So the kiddo can still dig? Plantain Lillies are a type of hosta. Which I believe are ok for torts? that breaks my heart to hear about how they’re...
