    Staying buried

Warm side is 93-97, cool side 80 with a few areas that are 78, directly under heat bulb is 97-100 and nighttime low is 80. We have the lights on a timer on 13 hours a day. He gets a 20 minute bath each morning and humidity is between 65%-85% at all times. He is on straight ecoearth. He has a...

    Staying buried

The temps have been posted repeatedly and are good. I can find them in my old posts if we need them but that isn't the problem in this situation.

    Staying buried

So Clyde had been in his new enclosure for a week and he hasn't come up unless I dig him up. I notice that as low as he is digging that the heat isn't penetrating all the way down. I am thinking maybe that is why? I am thinking of putting rocks under the substrate so he can't dig down so deep...

Tortoise buried in new enclosure. Should I dig him out for his daily bath?

Here about 85 grams. Not exactly a hatchlin but still getting hatchling care.

Tortoise buried in new enclosure. Should I dig him out for his daily bath?

I moved Clyde into a new enclosure. He promptly hid and buried somewhere and hasn't come out the rest of the day. I normally bathe him every morning. Should I try to figure out where he hid and unbury him or give him time to adjust first?

    Outdoor temperature question

So I have been watching the outdoor area I have been considering for Clyde. I have found that most of the area is in the 70s and 80s where he would be. There are two areas, one that gets up to 115 and one that gets to about 108. Since he has ample area to get away from the extra hot places will...

    Building Clyde's adult enclosure

I have a Russian tortoise, about 70 grams living in a 2x4 foot enclosure. While it is plenty of space now, we recently moved things around and I'm planning on getting his adult enclosure started soon. It still won't be the 'ideal' size for an adult Russian but it will be as big as we can fit for...

Personal experiences with indoor enclosure plants?

I read on here that pothos were bad for Russians? If that's not the case I have a few I have grown from cuttings I could use. I am going to get some large planning flats to rotate plants for eating on as well. Thank you for all the suggestions so far!!

Personal experiences with indoor enclosure plants?

So I know tortoise table has all the safe plants for torts but does anyone have personal experiences for good (or bad) indoor enclosure plants?

    Baby sleeping too much??

I understand the fragile fear!! Clyde blew a snot bubble once and I was ready to run him to the animal hospital! He was fine but I freaked out. If you can get access to mazuri food I soak them in water until it's like runny oatmeal and mix well into his greens and he inhales it!! One I started...

    Baby sleeping too much??

This is a bit old so I apologize. I have a baby who was that weight when we bought him home in November. He's up to 68 grams as of today and he still does the eat/sleep daily. There are a few longer stomp around times than when we first got him. He also likes to explore around early/mid...

Do some Russian tortoises stay dark?

I hope he stays dark. Thank you for your answer. Most I've seen are all very light so I wasn't sure

Do some Russian tortoises stay dark?

Clyde has a lot of dark coloring on his shell. Most adult Russians I see online are a lighter colored. Do some stay dark or is it normal for then to start dark then lighten up? Attached current Clyde pic because he's adorable should break 60 grams this week.

Clyde needs to be better at self starting

Warm side is 93-95, cool side 80 with a few areas that are 78, directly under heat bulb is 97-100 and nighttime low is 73. We have the lights on a timer on 13 hours a day. He gets a 20 minute bath each morning and humidity is between 65%-85% at all times. He is on straight ecoearth. He has a...

Clyde needs to be better at self starting

So Clyde is now about 8 months old. If I do but take him out for his morning bath he stays buried all day even with the lights on and during misting. He's gaining weight steadily, eats well, and is active but only if he gets a morning bath. Concerning or normal?

    Sick or no?

Nothing but good news to report this morning. Clyde's weight was back up so he must have eaten SOMETHING yesterday even though I didn't see it. No new nasal discharge and checked his breathing really closely, no squeaks. I mixed the soaked Mazuri over his greens and he immediately ate at least...

    Sick or no?

Ok so since he may be trying to get sick we bumped the ambient night temp to 75-77 (up from 70-73). I also extended his light hours from 13 up to 14. Brough his hot side up a few degrees as well. Tomorrow morning I'll water down and mix in Mazuri with his greens. Also picked up his favorite...

    Sick or no?

Thank you. One last question, since he is so little should I keep offering Mazuri since he is eating it or should I keep offering greens even though he's turning his beak up at them?
