Russians Legs chewed to bone NEED HELP!!

I talked to my dad today, he said the vet had him use an antibiotic ointment and keep the area clean. You may want to ask the vet about that. :) Good luck and my thoughts are with you both.

Russians Legs chewed to bone NEED HELP!!

I won't say 'don't worry' as I know that's impossible. But I will say that missing legs does not have to mean the end of a tortoises life. The tortoise I grew up with was rather viciously attacked by a bigger more aggressive male that chewed off both front feet and the little pokey out part...

    Winter Heat Options?

I got her a heat emitter and already there's a big difference in her behavior. She's scampering around and back to eating like the little piggie I know she is. Yay!

    Winter Heat Options?

I have the 50 gallon rubbermaid setup here http://www.russiantortoise.org/care_sheet.htm with a uva/uvb ceramic bell shaped lamp, which had been keeping her warm enough but now that it's truly getting cold it's just not cutting it. Doesn't help that my house has terrible insulation and we lose...

    Winter Heat Options?

So it's getting to be cooooooold so Rowdy is staying inside where it's.... not really warm! She's got a good sized enclosure inside thanks to the Russian tortoise website but I'm a bit concerned about the temps at night, it's not yet freezing and it's getting pretty low. What are some good...

    Identification help....

Sweet, that's helpful... now to convince her to get it OUT of the rodent cage and on a diet that doesn't consist of 'turtle chow'.

    Identification help....

So I said something about my tortoise in front of a coworker who piped up that she had one too. We started talking and she told me a bit about it, she isn't sure what kind it is or anything and I'm not too great and identifying blurry pictures so I bring it to you! I want to help her out...

    All my garden leaves...

    All my garden leaves...

I'm all sorts of hesitant to feed my lil Russian anything I can't find very specific info on so I figured I'd ask here. I have zucchini, pumpkin, and broccoli leaves taking over my world... or at least a good bit of my wee garden area. Are any/all of these tortoise okay? I know the actual...

    Rowdy Russian!

She didn't try it, but I may give her a bit again later. My neighbors are great with plans, they have 2 nasturum plants and just about every dark leafy green you can imagine growing in the front yard and told me I could have whatever I wanted for Rowdy. She is sooooo spoiled.

    Right under the light....

Yeah I'm noticing the love to dig part, I read that but you don't really kno what to expect til you see it in action. She doesn't really seem to care about her hide, she makes her own, usually by digging under the sunning rock, water thing, food plate or pile of hay... who needs a hide?

    Rowdy Russian!

She's quite the active and happy girl! I got a few good pics today when she came out to partake in a little red leaf and nasturum flowers.

    Rowdy Russian!

More pics will come once I sorta let her be for a few days, I don't want to traumatize her toooo much. It seems she wants to dig everywhere, in the garden, in the enclosure, looks like I'm going to have to make her bed-a-beast stuff a bit deeper.

    Right under the light....

Yes, I know I've only had her for half a day, but I'm curious. She seems to be trying to dig a little burrow RIGHT under her basking light. She's got a nice sized hide but she doesn't seem to care, she just wants, really badly to have a burrow under that light. The enclosure out of the light...

    Rowdy Russian!

We got my russian today and the first thing my boyfriend said as it scrambled about in the box was 'It's a rowdy little guy' and so it was named. We let it lose in it's little dwelling and so far it hasn't hidden but rather munched happily on the greens from out garden and jumped in an out of...

    Hiyas!

At least I'm not horribly, horribly allergic to them like I am my cat. And I could think of worse things than a house full of tortoises!

    Hiyas!

I started at that site and ended up here! And I've been reading the Russian section already. :D Now I just need to find a good rescue local to me. I found the herp society, but they meet at the same time I'm getting off work 2 hours away. :(

    Hiyas!

My name is Callie and I live in the Pacific Northwest. I don't currently have a tortoise, but I'm hoping to find a Russian Tortoise sometime in the next year or so. I grew up with a California Desert Tortoise named Woody for a pet who was with my family from the time my father was 19 until...

Russian Tortoise: Lighting cycles and hibernation??

RE Hibernation in Seattle: My family has a California Desert Tortoise for years and years who hibernated yearly in the Seattle area. If for some reason you DO decide to hibernate Oscar, the Garage should be fine in the winter, just make sure he's pretty well insulated. My father would put...
