Why does outdoor time limit growth?

PEC is a melanistic (dark) tortoise? Is that very rare. I've only seen one of those on the forum, a hatchling, and everyone was going crazy over it. But the tortoise looks normal as a baby. Did I miss something, or when did it get so dark?

Thanks, Yvonne. Wow, so there really was a bunch of work before I received him. It was LLL reptiles, I think, in Escondido. I have no idea who the breeder was.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but from what I understand, the lifespan of a leopard tortoise is shorter in captivity. Since many wild tortoises will not survive to adulthood, is this just a matter of superior fitness? I do suspect there are certain captivity restraints in almost all circumstances...

I have read the diet advice for leopards and sulcatas. I have a few remaining questions for young/mature leopard tortoises. 1. Raw sweet potato or cooked? Other potato? 2. Grass at a young age? 3. Eggs, cod liver oil, fish products, or shrimp?
