    Designing an outdoor enclosure

Hardware cloth (new term to me!) is actually what I have in the shed. I got some quite tight mesh to mouse proof the guinea pig cage when we had guinea pigs. It all tends to get called chicken wire in the UK. I'm planning to create a lip and lid to avoid any mountaineering expeditions.

    Designing an outdoor enclosure

Thanks Tom, I can definitely go further into the bushes, possibly as far as 11x7 but definitely as far as 11x6. An L shape would be problematic in a number of ways The area is actually half dirt / half grass. As you get nearer the wall and the trees, the grass stops growing/.

    Designing an outdoor enclosure

There are 3 of them. The enclosure will be 4.5ft x 11ft ish (I may be able to increase it to 5ft x 11ish. They are all girls (so I am told). It rarely gets very cold in the South East of England. Haven't thought about hibernating them yet. I was thinking that the cold frame would give them...

    Designing an outdoor enclosure

Hi all, Our spur thigh tortoises are now getting a little bigger (about 11-12 cm) and I am working out an outdoor enclosure for them. I am in the UK, Surrey, South East England - we generally get London temperatures. This is an aerial view of the garden. The enclosure is going to be where the...

    UK Diet for Spur Thighs

Having looked it up, they get a lot of smooth sow thistle, but not really the spiky kind.

    UK Diet for Spur Thighs

Someone just chopped down all the tree mallow, but regular mallow grows round here a lot!

    UK Diet for Spur Thighs

At the moment I have just been wandering around the verges and the green / woodland near the house and using PlantNet to identifiy plants then Tortoise Table to check whether they are suitable for Tortoises. My list is pretty much what seems to grow around here. I haven't tried Sow Thistle yet

    Basking temperature

Thanks Tom, The bulb is an Arcadia D3 UV / Basking flood bulb. I presume if it were too hot they would just move further away. I have remeasured using your technique and the temp falls into that range nicely. Iain

    UK Diet for Spur Thighs

HI all, Just wanted to check whether I'm giving enough variety to our Spur Thigh Tortoises. Currently they get wild weeds exclusively. They have had a purchased salad once when we needed my inlaws to look after them for a few days. I am in the UK, so these are British weeds... Daily:-...

    Basking temperature

Hi all, We have 2 female spur-thighed tortoises doing well (9.4cm and 10.3cm, 199gms and 228gms respectively). The stones that they bask on are usually around 34-35 degrees C. Is this about right or too hot? They certainly aren't distressed by the head, but I wonder if they need to be a...

    All about the weather

They are Mediterranean spur thigh. They definitely seemed happier and hungrier inside today.

    All about the weather

Thanks Tom, I have read it. So would you just take them outside when the sun is shining at their age?

    All about the weather

Hi all, I have two tortoises aged 10 months. I'm in Surry in the UK and the weather is currently in the 22-25 degree C bracket, dropping to 12-16 degrees at night. For the last few days / nights I have been letting the little chelonians stay in outdoor tortoise tables. I moved the tables...

Why not to keep 2 tortoises together - a lesson learned the hard way

Out of interest, do you think there is any difference if the tortoises have been together from birth (i.e. brood siblings)? Am asking as we have two spur-thighed tortoises which are female siblings. They are about a year old now and seem fairly happy sharing the same table. They will sometimes...

    Tortoises and streams and birds...

HI all, We have two spur-thigh tortoises which are now about a year old. At the moment they have an indoor tortoise table and an outdoor one with a mesh lid so that they can catch some rays (i'm in Surrey, UK so sunshine is limited but does happen!). Our garden has two small ponds (about 2ft...
