Are these greens safe for russian tortoises?

This is a great list Tom, and as always you are super helpful, but the question I have, especially on weeds, and to a lesser extent, leaves, is where do you get them? I wouldn’t know a good we’d from a bad weed in my yard, same with leaves, and I spend most of my time with various pesticides...

Chalk up another one for the anti-coil light contingent

Sorry for the delay. This is the light I bought. I got the 14 inch to light half of my enclosure, I think that is what I want to do, keep one side lit, the other darker and cooler. If that is not what I should be doing, please let me know.

Chalk up another one for the anti-coil light contingent

i will take a picture of the exact box I got tonight. I forget exactly which one I got, or I would take a screenshot of it and post it now. but yes, as the previous poster said, it is a long tube. I got the 14" so it provides light on the one side of my enclosure, so I can keep the other side...

Chalk up another one for the anti-coil light contingent

Hello all. I posted about this in a thread I started in the Russian tortoise thread, but thought I would share it here too, since this is a more generic thing, and can potentially help other owners. I am new to all of this tortoise ownership, we have had him 11 days now. But I was worried...

    Shell bottom burnt???

Heeding a bunch of people's advice, I went out and bought an infrared temperature gauge. Right under the light, on the basking slate I am using, the temperature varied a fair amount on the slate, anywhere between 100, and at its hottest spot on the slate, around 110. getting away from the...

Thoughts on new russian burying itself constantly?

Good morning everyone. Wanted to give you all an update. It is a good one! I guess we can chalk up another one for the anti-coil light contingent!!!! Once I realized I actually had a coil light (thanks to those who pointed that out to me, I didn't actlly think I had a coil light!!!), as...

    Shell bottom burnt???

Ok good. New at this, so questioning everything I do!!!! Never really looked at the bottom of the shell that closely, and for some reason, just looked different to me tonight.

    Shell bottom burnt???

hi everyone. My son’s tortoise is finally spending most of his day not buried, which is good. But now I have a different concern. The tortoise spent a lot of time basking today, and it could be that I just never looked close enough at the underside of his tortoise, but his shell looks blacker...

Thoughts on new russian burying itself constantly?

Ugh, that is a coil bulb that I have???? I didn’t think that was a coil bulb. I kept on seeing people say that, but I thought THESE were coil bulbs. I will replace it tonight if that is the case.

Thoughts on new russian burying itself constantly?

Good morning everyone. Did anyone get a chance to look at the pics I posted? Any thoughts on the enclosure set-up, or the lighting I am using? I had also asked about the height of my temperature / humidity gauge. I did find somewhere that said I probably had it too high, that it should be...

    Substrate

Hi Rosemary, thanks for the heads up, I apologize if I broke forum decorum! :) other than this and the Jeep Wrangler forum, I have no social media presence, so not real sure of the etiquette. I have no problem with them moving it. And thank you for your response. That makes sense. I guess I...

    Substrate

Hi LeighElizabeth. I hope you don’t mind me adding a substrate related question on to your thread. It is very likely a question you may even be able to answer for me (sorry, new owner here, so I have no answer for your question). The place where I bought my Russian from this week told me that...

Thoughts on new russian burying itself constantly?

This is a picture of the enclosure we are using right now. It is an exo-terra large reptarium which is 36x18x12. I know from my research this is not perfect, but it is temporary. We are getting ready to do renovations to our house, and when we do, my son moves to a bigger room, and when he...

Thoughts on new russian burying itself constantly?

Hello everyone. I have read the sticky thread posted by Yvonne on this topic, but wanted to get some insights from all of you based on my specific situation. We brought our new Russian home about 1 pm sunday. By 3, he had buried himself. He stayed buried until about 430 yesterday afternoon...

First time tortoise owner - Russian tortoise

Hello Yvonne, and everyone else. Just a follow up on my intro thread. So, based on your comment yesterday Yvonne, which had me a bit curious / nervous about which tortoise I actually had, I started googling "Russian vs greek" tortoise, and one article I read actually recommended a forum...

First time tortoise owner - Russian tortoise

Here is another closer up picture of Twiggles if it helps in identifying if he may be a Greek and not a Russian as I was told he is. One article I saw said a difference is 4 vs 5 toes on the forefeet. I can’t tell how many toes there are in this picture!
