New to the forum and the world of torts! I've been keeping and breeding geckos for 20+ years and the wife said she wanted a cute tortoise. So many months of trying to convince her otherwise and research, we got 2 sulcata hatchlings on a trade. Figured if I'm gonna do it, may as well dive in head first, right?

Well, yes, but, they don't do well in pairs, so you need to either get a third or house them separately. Or I suppose you could give one away...

Most of the info "out there" is outdated and based on incorrect assumptions. Here is care info that works:

I have the room to house them separately eventually (17 acres of mountain land, 10 acres of reclaimed farm land, all in South Central Pennsylvania). I also have no problems building large temp controlled sheds when the time comes. I more or less took the 2 because it was in the trade. They are both just over 3" in length, I assume they are clutch mates but I'm not positive. I've read all your articles and posts Tom, my main concern is wanting to wait until they are sexable to let one go. I would prefer a female, no real reason, just personal preference. Advise? Criticism? Offers?

Sounds like you have lots of space and the desire to raise them well! Congrats on your new sulcatas and welcome to the forum:)

I'm of the school that says keep them together, BUT...you have to be ever vigilant. Bullying isn't always visible. Pay attention to whether one stays hidden more than the other, etc.

Thank you Yvonne, I already watch them like hawks, even considered adding a streaming video feed of their enclosure, because I'm afraid they will flip themselves over while I'm at work. Being a gecko guy, I'm overly cautious when entering into new species...especially ones out of my comfort zone.
