image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Our beautiful 3 month old Dalmatian Hermanns Tortoise arrived from Chris Leone yesterday. To create his tortoise table we utilized an armoire that used to house our family room television. We upgraded to a wall mount flat screen which left the armoire available for its new incarnation. We (when I say "we" please know this means my Husband!) removed all internal shelves. We inserted the 1st piece of wood up front to keep the substrate in place. Then tacked down a thick black shelf liner we found in a roll at Lowes. Next was his balcony which we created with a small shelf that had bark intact on two sides. We collected branches from a recent tree trimming to create the balcony railings and the ladder. I inserted a thick bed of moss on top of the balcony. Next were his hide, some rocks, mopani wood, food & water dishes and his cuttlebone. We've got a PowerSun UVB overhead and a 5" substrate mix of organic top soil and coco coir. He's buried in his hide probably still recovering from his plane ride!

Very cool...you could also add a piece of plexi glass on the front to be certain the tort remains in the dedicated space...you could use a piece that goes part of the way or one that goes the entire way--which would offer up a way to balance some warmth and some humidity.....you could even create a couple of sliding glass doors....very cool idea...

I was thinking plexiglass too. You could utilize the door hinges that are still attached....Is that a cat or a dog? A cat might want to hop up and take a nap in there and the plexi would discourage that as well. I especially like the hand rails on the ramp! Mine would fall over off the edge. Nice touch.

It could give them extra space and paces to sleep... Plus it looks nice :D
The hand rails are nice, but I'm afraid he might break the deck twigs themselves if he really pushed on them
Very nice, though I really like the idea for the hutch :D

For the moment we have a taller 10" piece of wood that slides in front of that shorter piece. This give me piece of mind knowing he can't fall out the front. We are pricing out a piece of tempered glass for the front panel which will replace the 10" piece of wood.

That's our long haired mini dachshund! Trust me, those legs are too short to reach anything!

I love the use of the armoire for your enclosure! Recycling at its best! Great job. You can tell you (and your hubby!) took a lot of care setting up a great space for your tortie!
