Hi there,
My name is Julie. I have been thinking about getting a tortoise for a while now, but put serious thought into it this past year. I recently purchased the 40 gallon ZooMed reptile starter kit along with a little water rock thing an a bark shade thing. I haven't set it up yet. I was going to see what all you smart people thought about that setup. I also have yet to purchase a tortoise yet. I also wanted to see what your thoughts were on what type to get. I've done quite a bit of research, but wanted some input. Thanks for your time. I'm excited to be apart of this community. Happy day to all!

As a starter tortoise Russians are good. Or a box turtle. I would stay away from leopards or sulcatas unless you have plenty of room in your yard for them to grow into. The bigger the better for these guys.

Are you willing to use almost all of it for one of the bigger torts? Also they eat a lot more. Lots of considerations to think of. Where do you live? what's your climate like?

I live in Eugene, Oregon. I thought about getting a sulcata, but only could use about half for the tortoise. I was hoping to find one that gets to be a foot or foot and a half.

Will the indoor enclosure work until it gets bigger?

My plan was to have the indoor thing until it gets too big for that. Then was going to build something out back for it. House and whatnot. I'm still doing research on that.
