Hi Everyone, My name is Janys and I live in St Petersburg, FL. I have a 5 month old baby Sulcata named Mojo. I have always loved tortoises. A lot of my friends have different kinds of tortoises and a few have Sulcatas. I really liked the Sulcatas and I did research on them and decided on one. I bought him from a pet store. The gentleman told me what I needed and I bought everything he needed. I bought a book on them as well as I been looking at different forums. I am in need of some correct information on how to care for my little Mojo. As I have mixed so called facts from the book, forums and my friends. A friend of mine passed this forum onto me and said you guys were great, very helpful and gave correct info on the care of a baby Sulcata.

Now I have to figure out where I put my questions or finding the questions already asked on the forum. New to forums. :)

Hope everyone has had a fabulous day :) Take care!

Most pet stores and all the books have it all wrong. We did it incorrectly for decades. Sulcata babies hatch during the rainy season. It hot, rainy, marshy and humid. There is green food growing everywhere. During the dry season, they hang out underground.

Here are some threads for you:

Hello, and Welcome:) Tom is so right, so please read his threads, he has done the research and experiments himself to help us all grow healthy, smooth sulcatas. His threads are also below in my post. The leopard ones apply also, except for the size differences.

Welcome! Lots of good, helpful information here on the forum. Make sure you check your temperatures, humidity levels, soaking regime, water bowl, lighting and types of food to feed. It's easy to think that you are doing the right thing only to find out that you redeived totally incorrect/harmful information. This Forum has lots of experienced sulcata owners and breeders. Ask away with your questions, post some pix of you are enclosures, etc. good luck!

This is Mojo's home. I have two thermostats. It stays between 100-105 on the lamp side. It stays at 84 on the other side. He has a big pool to sit in. I been feeding him hibiscus leaves, kale, spring mix, wheat grass and once a week we give him a small piece of watermelon. He gets calcium powder 3 times a week. Eye drops once a week. We soak him every other day for 5-10 minutes. I am in the process of building him an outdoor play area that will be safe for him. I also just ordered a bunch of seeds from the tortoisesupply link. I am going to make a 5 tier shelf to grow the seeds for him.

My question is am I feeding him to much. That is the size pile I feed him and I feed him everyday. Am I over feeding him, should the pile be smaller? He devours that whole pile in a day. I weigh him ever third day and he gains 1 to 2 grams ever third day. When we got him at the beginning of July he weighed 43grams. Now he weighs 54 grams.
