Was there sphagnum or peat moss used?
Yes. Sphagnum moss purchased from home depot was placed in the hides and corners. I put it in at the initial set up. To my knowledge it was never changed. Would that do something?
I use the same product but routinely change mine out.

Also, I was under the understanding that it was the opposite? That sphagnum and some other misses were antibacterial and anti fungal by nature? Am I way off base in this thinking? I'm not sure where I obtained that thought specifically though so feel free to point me in the right direction. :)

Kimber - Are you still temp sexing female? If so, what temp? I'm wondering if they are getting over-cooked in there.

The 2 TSF babies I got in February didn't make it past March. They just never adjusted to being in their chamber when I brought them home.

Another consideration is I keep my humidity 70-85% ambient and maximum near 100% in humid hides. I didn't realize they were kept any different until I saw one of Heather Gomberg's posts showing the babies in her chamber. I wonder if the high humidity to my lower (but still high) humidity affected them adversely because they were so young. A little older and they would have adjusted better.

My temps are controlled, diet & supplements are Tom's way and all of my other leopards older & younger are thriving, growing smoothly.

I took them both to a vet that owns torts, I did baby food soaks for two weeks, it was an uphill battle and I only prolonged their suffering. It was really hard.

They had closed eyes, hardly ate & went soft. No shell rot though or any visible issues. It was like they dried up even with daily soaks, then later baby food soaks too.

Not all sphagnum contains fungus.. but it's a possibility that the green moss you got from Home Depot wasn't high enough quality and/or rich enough to keep things moist and humid. I've been hatching and selling these tortoises for over 15 years and I always supply these lil' guys with Oregon green moss.
