Looking for a new Tortoise?

I've had my russian tortoise for 3 years now. I've decided to get another tortoise. I gave my russian a new home, about 15 x 10 feet inside a big mosquito net (used for the pool/jacuzzi) and he's very safe, perfect spot. Not too much sun but enough sun. No ants, bugs. It's a perfect habitat. I can't figure out what tortoise to get. It's florida so it's fairly humid. I'm looking for something as big or slightly bigger then a female russian tortoise. My budget is 250$, also can I keep the two tortoises together or should I split the habitat in two?

If you get another species of tortoise, you'll need a separate habitat. Never mix species. You may end up with sick or dead tortoises.

A red foot tortoise or cherry headed red foot, might suit you well there.

I agree. Separate enclosures are a must.

If you're looking for something that's slightly bigger than a Russian, a cherryhead red foot is about as good as you can get. If you're looking a little bigger than 12" give or take, a leopard or yellowfoot might be more your style.

Are you set on a different species? If not, and if your Steppe tortoise is female, get it another female Steppe tortoise to share it's enclosure. But be sure both are females, as 1 male + 1 female is bad, and 2 males is even worse!

This is an excellent price for a marginated tortoise. Same genus as your Russian but will be larger. Seems like it would be a perfect match for you.
