(Sorry, Grampa, but I don't think Russian writing looks like that, but nice try!!)

Hi no brains to scatter! (Or maybe you don't want us to scatter what brains you do have! WE WON'T)

Welcome to the Forum.

What you have there is a very nice-looking captive bred and born Russian tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii).

Is it just the way the picture was taken or is the shell a bit funky looking? Hi and welcome! Is this your tortoise?

Hi all, thanks for your reply and humour.

This is my tortoise, how I got him is unexpected a very long story involving my 84 year old nan who has Alzheimer's. The result being last night I had a two and a half hour trip to pick him up. She could only remember that his breed began with an H, although to be fair I didn't necessarily even believe that, so well done nana!

I'm intrigued as to what you mean by funky?

Here are a few more pics. Does it look ok funky, or bad funky?

I am going out today to get the wood so hubby can make a table and then to get lamp, bowls advice etc .

I can only seem to add one photo to a post, so here's another.

Any comments would be very gratefully received

Actually, another name for a Russian tortoise is Horsfield's tortoise, so your nan was right!

Very cute. I think your new little friend could benefit from some long warm soaking time and some good UVB lighting. How big is it, do you know if its male or female yet? Very very cute.

I think he's just quite dry. Once you get him set up properly and get him hydrated, he should look better.
