So... Is this what happens when a red foot mates with a yellow foot? Is this then, an orange foot? LOL. Whatever s/he is, what a beautiful tort!

No it’s not a hybrid ….just a unique variation of the Redfoot species ;)

Absolutely beautiful.

JD, do you think this pattern is related to some abrupt change in diet or environment/husbandry? I ask because it looks like the marbling / pattern change occurred at a specific instant in time. The scute centers and maybe a year's worth of growth is brown, then suddenly the new growth went to black & yellow.

Steve …I actually believe It’s a genetic thing. A type of marker per say . We carry them too…such as freckles and or a mole. Usually the Parent or Grandparent of that offspring/child will have the same attributes….sometimes in the same location sometimes not , but subtle clues that carry thru the family "genes" of that particular
"marker". So, as far as outside environmental stimuli accounting for the pattern/color .. .I would say no …although good forethought indeed. The hypos are another genetic marker that comes thru within the two different gene lines of my hypos and although different variations are produced you can see “markers” hold true from the hatchlings and what mother produced them .

Interesting about the markers JD.
Especially once you pointed out the family moles. My son has some moles in the exact location as I do!
